122mm Artillery
Soviet 122mm Artillery is a unit available in Flames of War. It likely represents the Soviet 122 mm howitzer, more commonly known as the M-30.
IRL[edit]
The M-30 started as a project to replace older 122mm howitzers then in service with the Red Army, all stuff that was mostly Russian Imperial holdover tech. F.F. Petrov, the same guy who developed the 76mm Anti-Tank gun, worked on developing this new weapon. He would compete with a rival designer named Grabin. Grabin's design incorporated many new features, but Petrov's gun was chosen because it was easier to produce and teach existing personnel how to use, in contrast with the F-25 which used an entirely new mechanism.
M-30s were used throughout the Red Army as support guns that would be found in both light field regiments and howitzer regiments with his cousin, the D-1. Like many heavy howitzers, it was one of the few weapons that could reliably take on the German big cats. It also saw use clearing minefields of all things, because 12 cm of HE tends to blow up other explosives really really well.
The M-30 was a successful weapon and saw service until replacement in the 1960s. It saw service throughout the rest of the Centruy in Middle-Eastern countries, China, and Finland until the 1980s. The Finns actually really liked the weapons they had captured during the Winter and Continuation wars, which stands largely as a testament to the skill of Petrov as an artillery designer.
