"Of course you should fight fire with fire. You should fight everything with fire."

- Jaya Ballard, task mage (as relayed on the "Sizzle" card)

Jaya Ballard was a pre-Mending planeswalker. She started off her career as a task mage, which was a term for unaffiliated problem-solvers-at-large who operated during Dominaria's Ice Age. She was an associate of Jodah, the Archmage Eternal, and eventually became a planeswalker after various crazy adventures with him. It was previously hinted that she founded Keral Keep, the monastery where Chandra Nalaar trained.

One of the best things about her is the flavor text. A lot of the best flavor text on Magic: The Gathering cards from the mid-1990s is attributed to her.

She currently has a creature card and one planeswalker cards. Even though spellshapers did not originally exist in card form during the Ice Age, Jaya's creature card is templated as one, with each of the spells she shapes mimicking a famous card that featured one of her quotes (Pyroblast, Incinerate, and Inferno, in order).
