Davriel Cane

The face of a man with far too many problems, but far too little drive to do anything about it himself.

Davriel Cane is a Planeswalker from Magic: The Gathering, specializing in Black mana (though he does occasionally splash Blue). Specifically, he is classified as both a diabolist who deals in demons, and a shadowmage capable of fraying the sanity of any poor fool who crosses his path. As a character, Davriel is a suave, cunning anti-hero with dashing good looks to back it up. He is almost never seen without his signature mask and cloak, which he wears to obscure his features. He was introduced in a free e-book released by WoTC, written by Brandon Sanderson, the same Brandon Sanderson who suggested the three laws of hard magic systems, as well as establishing the Mistborn series of books. He proved to be a popular enough character with the fans that he even got a card in War of the Spark.

Davriel first came about his powers after ripping a mysterious entity out of a dying man's mind, and sticking it inside of him. This mysterious entity turned out to be a wandering Worldsoul, a powerful avatar of a plane that tempts Davriel with unlimited power, if he surrenders his body and mind to it. Having read far too many contracts in his previous life to know that such a deal was fishy at best, Davriel convinced the entity to instead give him a planeswalker spark, and the ability to steal other people's spells right out of their heads like a Spellthief. Despite his best efforts to stay out of trouble, trouble usually ends up finding him. Davriel has also mastered the subtle art of not giving a fuck about anything at all besides retaining his inner sense of peace, and doing anything in his power to keep that peace. This is a man who managed to outlive the Eldrazi invasion of Innistrad by simply not caring at all, and is only really spurred to do anything for the plane he lived on after some girl stabs him with a rusty shiv. He also has a retinue of demons at his beck and call that he has soul contracts with, making sure to include clauses in the fine print that he cannot possibly fulfill, letting him get out scott-free. One such demon is Voluptara, a smartly dressed humanoid demon that he employs as his personal accountant.

He was also briefly embroiled in War of the Spark, but that was mostly just an excuse to give him a card. He is one of the few planeswalkers who simply did not care about the war going on, and spent most of the time partying with the Rakdos and considering selling his soul to the big man himself. He also becomes fast friends with Ob Nixilis, and considers hiring him for his own ends. When it becomes obvious that the war was in fact pretty important, he reluctantly joins the fight against the Eternals alongside Tibalt, who manages to not fuck things up for once. The minute the Immortal Sun is turned off though, Davriel fucks off back to Innistrad.

Davriel's sole appearance in a card is in the form of Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage. He is a 2 generic, 1 black uncommon planeswalker with 3 starting loyalty. His passive shocks your opponent on their upkeep if they have 1 or fewer card in their hand, and his -1 simply causes a player to discard a card. He was basically only put there for War of the Spark limited and for the few people who love discard-heavy decks, where he does a pretty good job of pressuring your opponent in the late game. Far more interesting about this card is that it perhaps has some of the smoothest voice lines on Magic: the Gathering Arena. It almost makes you want to build a deck around him, even though he's not that good a card, and discard heavy-deck have a number of hindering problems to them.
