Unforgiven by the rest of the Imperium the Sons of Icarus carry a heavy burden. Also known as the Beasts Within or the Repentant Hounds, they are a chapter which was formed after the fall of the World Eaters to Chaos following the Drop Site Massacre. As a way to prove their loyalty and clean their brothers' blood from their hands, the chapter has crusaded as best they can. Assisting Inquisition task forces and engaging renegade Space Marines.
The World Eaters Splintered[edit]
The Sons of Icarus are a splinter from the World Eaters Legion that split during the Dropsite Massacre. During the initial attack of the Massacre of Istvaan and the Loyalist ships were under attack by the Traitor ships; Angron's Capital Ship, The Conquerer, beamed marines aboard one of the strike cruisers. Marines of the Salamander's legion had already departed the Cruiser toward the surface, allowing the World Eaters little resistance.
The Captain of the 17th Assault Company had doubts about their legions's orders. He explained his suspicion about the butcher's nails' influence on the legion and made them face their own sins. Standing in a room of slaughtered Space Marines and loyal naval officers, the World Eaters Company went quiet. Brothers had to be put down, lest they ruin the plan. Captain Haakon and the loyalists put down many of their brothers. Between the two companies, less than 130 marines survived the boarding attempt. The ship had been brought to heel as most of the crew, well trained as they were, were not Space Marines and once the command structure was destroyed they crumbled. With the World Eaters in command of the vessel they plotted a course out of the system. The traitors' fleet saw this shift and tried to intercept. The Loyalist fleet was burning and the Strike Cruiser was targeted. Luckily the ship's shield was intact and deflected most of the damage. The ship managed to leave the system but took damage to their internals and the Geller field.
Desperate Escape[edit]
The World Eaters' strike cruiser escaped the Istvaan system and their course was to a distant world where they could drift and recollect on what happened. Most of the marines under his command had the Butcher's nails's implanted but they were not tainted by graces of what afflicted the greater legion. Some had to be restrained as they raged at their own legion for betraying astartes. A scream signaled the death of their navigator. The damaged Geller field could not keep the warp from entering the ship. The Navigator died only moments after their jump. Alarms sounded throughout the ship as breaches were sighted. The Astartes prepared for battle against the unknown.
As the sounds of battle rang in the ship the World Eaters' fought to keep their ship. The minutes until the ship returned to realspace killed a dozen marines from tentacled creatures and twisted incarnations of rage wielding blades as black as midnight. Many thought it their own demons made manifest. The 17th company retreated to the safety of the materium in an unknown sector of the galaxy.
