Microscope is a narrative role-playing game described as "fractal", as players will use similar rules to describe the story as is stretches over millennia, generations, years or days. The players will start with a vague plotline of how things will begin and end, and insert details into this plotline with increasing amount of detail as the span of time they describe decreases. Players can assert any facts about the story they wish during their turn, so long as it does not contradict any facts already established on previous turns. If a player objects to an assertion on another player's turn, a simple die-roll mechanic is used for determining who has prioirty.
This is a very good game for collaboratively building a world history for your campaign setting. Since players can insert periods/events/scenes anywhere on the timeline, it works well for an asynchronous medium like message boards.
