Warband History[edit]

Once the 12th Bastion of the Bulwark, the Jernrådet began as the outcast amongst the other Bastions; whereas the other 11 Bastions recruited from the Arelon system, the 12th Bastion recruited from the nearby Barskahmp system. The two systems had been at war since time immemorial, and the feud had only ended due to the arrival of Hektor Cincinnatus, Primarch of the Heralds of Hektor.

With a much lower population than the Arelon system, Barskahmp only contributed enough recruits to create one Bastion, which fostered a feeling of inferiority and spite amongst its members. Their culture and tactics were also vastly different from that of the other 11 Bastions, which only further exacerbated their isolation from the rest of the Legion.

By the time of the Crucible, their Tower, Thoren Grimm, had already been swayed to Chaos by the Tower of the 7th Bastion. Being assigned to the front lines of the battle, the 12th Bastion retreated at the first sight of the Silver Cataphracts and Steel Marshal forces. This gross act of cowardice left the 9th Bastion completely defenseless against the invading forces. The 9th Bastion was slaughtered to a man and that portion of the Crucible's defenses fell within a month.

Out of the roughly 8,000 Marines that made up the 12th Bastion, over half followed Thoren in his rebellion against his Primarch; those that did not were left to die with the 9th Bastion.

Losing several of their primary void vessels in their escape, the diminished 12th Bastion was dubbed the Jernrådet by their leader and now exist as a Chaos-affiliated warband that haunts the Segmentum Tempestus.

Notable Members[edit]

Thoren Grimm, Tower of the 12th Bastion[edit]

Thoren Grimm, Tower of the 12th Bastion

On the snowy terrain of Rasmus's World existed a mercenary group known as Knudsen's Rampagers that protected a few villages from the other factions waging war on Rasmus's World. Usually keeping to themselves, they had recently gone on the offensive and attacked too many factions at once, leading to the majority of the factions to wage war against Knudsen's Rampagers. One day, during a reprieve of fighting, a village was destroyed due to suspected connection to the Rampagers. Amongst the wreckage, the Rampagers discovered a burdgundy-haired youth; the only survivor of the attack on his village.

A week later, Knudsen himself came to see the child that the patrol found. Acknowledging Thoren's perseverance and determination by surviving, Knudsen then told the patrol that found Thoren to teach him in subjects that pertained to the war and train him for combat. Naming the child Thoren Grimm, or "Thunder Child" in Rasmussic, the leader of the patrol adopted the child. After being initiated into the Rampagers and trained in the art of war, Thoren was placed in a Leidang with his mentor and many other Rampagers.

While the war changed with the Rampagers gaining the advantage, another group was interested in the world. Sebastion Rex, Primarch of the The XXVIII Legion, also Emperor of Arelon, had long been in a feud war with the inhabitants of Rasmus's World. Landing upon the planet, Sebastion ordered a decimation of the indigenous civilization as a show of force. After this, any youth of a proper age were brainwashed and press-ganged into service to the XXVIII Legion, including Thoren Grimm, who would be picked out for his leadership abilities and fierce combat skills after a gladiatorial match held in honour of the planet's new rulers. Thoren was then placed in command of his new Bastion, which was used to cleanse the planet of any faction that had dared to stand against Sebastion.

After a month of non-stop combat, the last remaining enemy factions surrendered and were taken as thralls to be forced to assist Knudsen and his Rampagers, who had previously been taken on by Thoren's Bastion as Light Auxilia.

Knudsen's Rampagers[edit]

Pre-Heresy; 12th Bastion

Lucian Wengar - Jarl of the 4th Félag of the 12th Bastion. Critically wounded during WAAAGH!Teefrippa after killing Warboss Teefrippa himself. After the battle, he was interred in a MK IV dreadnought.

Targor Mandivius -

Karl Murdecainen -

Arnwald Rimmeren - Went on to lead the 35th Expeditionary Fleet.

Trygve Harkonen - Jarl of the 1st Félag, and one of the people who set Thoren Grimm down the path of rebellion against the Emperor and the Bulwark.

Warband Combat Doctrine[edit]

The Jernrådet specialize in shock and awe with overwhelming firepower thanks to their former connections with the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Rådet does not bend. They are ridiculously stoic and utterly unfazeable. They inevitably march towards their enemies while using some of the heaviest armament possible and are best when harnessed as an offensive role instead of defensive.

Warband Equipment[edit]

Thanks to their affiliation with certain elements of the Adeptus Mechanicus during the Great Crusade, the Rådet had access to larger stocks of Terminator armour and heavy weapons to the point where they could outfit heavy support infantry with Terminator armour and weapons. Since the Heresy, they're forced to rely on the unpredictable Dark Mechanicus and slaves to replenish or repair their stocks of terminator armour, which often lead to mishaps and other consequences.

Warband Organization[edit]

Post-Heresy; Warband

The 12th Bastion was formed into 10 Félags (companies) with 10 Leidangs (squads) in each Félag. A Jarl leads each Félag, with 10 Chieftains leading their Leidangs. Occasionally, the Jarl and the Chieftains may call for a meeting where they discuss plans for the present and martial progress within the Félag. Moving lower to the chain of command, the Leidangs consist of 10-15 Legionaries, 1 veteran Chieftain, and 1 squad of Rampager Light Auxilia.

Warband Culture[edit]

The Jernrådet believes in loudness being an indicator of how powerful a person is. This in turn leads to them constantly shouting and affixing attachments on their guns to make them louder. They hold a Thing comprised of any Jarl willing to arrive to the event every century, where they discuss what they've encountered and other Chapter related issues/disputes.

Unfortunately, this boisterous and rowdy culture acts in direct contention with the more controlled nature of their brethren; as such, the Marines of the 12th Bastion often act as if they are above the rest of the Legion in an attempt to make up for their perceived slights.

Rasmus's World[edit]

The primary populated planet within the Barskahmp system, Rasmus's World is a desolate and frost-bitten wasteland of treacherous terrain and dangerous creatures; those who call it home are a hardy folk that have adapted to survive in the environment. The majority of the planet's year is spent within winter's grip, with a scant 10 months to plant and harvest food for the rest of the 30 month period. Many of the planet's residents have since moved into underground warrens and domesticated the planet's local lifestock in order to supplement their scant harvests.

However, Rasmus's World was also an Industrial World full of powered-off mining equipment that the locals had formerly used to mine metals and minerals. After reverting to a more primal culture and lifestyle, the local populace simply forgot how the machinery worked. Perhaps the engineers died early or the knowledge was destroyed. Whatever the case, cities formed around these machines, and as the cities' residents tried to figure out how to turn the machines back on, wars were being waged between multiple factions because of the abundant resources and unused technology. These wars were often bloody and counterproductive to the main reason as to why they waged the wars. Sometimes, these wars would settle down for a generation or so, leading to the combined might of the planet launching raids into the nearby Arelon system, starting a rivalry between the two systems. Eventually, the ruling members of Rasmus's World would come into some point of contention and devolve into feuding factions again, however.
