Hunt the Webway Gate

Hunt the Webway Gate is a Cheese tactic performed by Eldar Players in Dawn of War. It is used by a losing player to stall for time.

Overview[edit]

Hunt the Webway Gate is an infuriating tactic done by other players in Dark Crusade and by the computer-controlled AI in the campaign in Dawn of War: Soulstorm. The centerpiece of the mechanic is that the Webway Gate, an inexpensive building that the Eldar must build both as a utility structure and as a population booster, counts as a production structure and can be stealthed, which means that a common tactic for a player about to lose is to send a single Bonesinger off (it can teleport) and have it build a single Gate in a far off position before buying the stealth upgrade for it. The idea is to force players to hunt down and exterminate every last Webway Gate and every last Bonesinger; even a gate still being built will count as a building for the purposes of the annihilate win condition, and since deleting a structure recoups some or all of the costs, an Eldar player can stall for an insane amount of time just by doing this. In several cases, a losing Eldar player who kept these shenannigans up for long enough could win matches by causing other players to ragequit.

A similar, but more legitimate version of this tactic can be used to potentially allow an Eldar player who has otherwise been wiped to get back into the game again, given sufficient time.

Counters[edit]

The best counter to an Eldar player doing this is to turn up your volume and look around. Even through the Fog of War, Webway gates under stealth make a distinctive "chinging" sound that gives away their general position; send units with detectors to scout for potential sites, and wipe them out one by one. If at all possible, find and gun down the actual Bonesinger itself; the tactic can only persist as long as the builder itself is alive. Bonesingers teleport, which does make them hard to tie up, but they are very vulnerable to being focused down by ranged units; a Sniper scout squad or team of Fire Warriors can ensure the pointy-eared bastard has a very bad day if it gets remotely near them, and from there you just need to hunt the remaining gates down.
