Background[edit]
Dr. Gessler had once been among the most celebrated surgeons of the Lookshy Medical Corps, until he realized his desire to see humanity bettered. The Terrestrials, for all their might, were imperfect beings; given to petty lusts and grievances unbecoming of a superior being. The Celestials he'd heard of were little better. Raksi and Ma-Ha Suchi were all but consumed by them. Clearly unfit for beings of their power.
He tried to show this during a routine checkup on a staff officer, whom he drugged and strapped to the table. His assistants fled, except for two: a voluptuous nurse, and a hulking stevedore. He cut into her, carefully peeling back the layers of tissue to find the organ responsible for controlling Exaltation. He was never able to find it, which he attributes to poor tools, lack of time, and the fact that as he was going to cut into the tissue that he thought might hold the key to his search, the guards came in and arrested him.
As he sat in his cell, awaiting trial, a luminata came to him and slid its tendrils around him. It whispered words of encouragement to him, stoking his ego and inflaming his desire to see the mechanics of Exaltation firsthand. He accepted the offer. When the guards came to collect him, they found a gleaming, perfect shell. He burst from it soon after, and escaped to Malfeas with the help of Ygoar and his nurse. He has been working there ever since, attempting to delve into the secrets of Essence-use to replicate it and make it available to all he wishes.

Mutations[edit]
- Enhanced Senses (Essence Sight) (4): Dr. Gessler was gifted with a nictitating membrane that allows him to see into the spectrums of Essence.
- Enhanced Senses (Sight) (1): Dr. Gessler's eyes were enhanced greatly by his time spent Exalting, granting him +2 dice to Awareness rolls using sight.
- Delusions (-2): Dr. Gessler believes in cutting away the 'unhealthy' flesh of mortals to root out disease and unwanted mutation.
- Obsession (-2): Dr. Gessler constantly feels the urge to find the Essence Membrane; the organ that controls Terrestrial Exaltation. He receives a -2 penalty to all actions not related to subduing a Terrestrial Exalt and finding it.
- Megalomania (-1): Dr. Gessler must roll Compassion in any scene where he meets someone who does not follow his commands. Failing this roll results in a strong dislike for the person. Botching it sends him into immediate homicidal rage, and he spends the next scene trying to kill the person who dared question his authority. He may resist this by spending one Willpower.
Charms[edit]
- Hardened Devil-Body - --m, Permanent: Dr. Gessler gains three -2 Health Levels, and one -4 Health Level.
- 1st Pyrian Excellency - 1m+, Reflexive, Instant: Dr. Gessler may add up to (Attribute+Ability) dice to one Pyrian-themed roll, at the cost of 1m per die.
- 2nd Pyrian Excellency - 2m+, Reflexive, Instant: Dr. Gessler may add one success to any Pyrian-themed roll, at the cost of 2m per success, to a maximum of (Attribute+Ability).
- Pyrian Inevitability Technique - --m(1wp), Permanent: For the cost of 1wp, Dr. Gessler may lower the target number of any roll which he uses the 1st Pyrian Excellency to 6.
- Factual Determination Analysis - 2m, Reflexive, Instant: Gessler takes a written or spoken statement and breaks it down to find if it is a lie, either in part or in whole. Gessler adds his Essence in bonus successes should the statement be backed by Charms or other magic.
- Essence-Dissecting Stare - (8-Perception/Occult)m, Simple, One Hour: Gessler gains Essence Sight, allowing him to see dematerialized objects and beings and the like. He may roll (Intelligence+Occult) to identify charms and powers of creatures. Gauging the rating of an artifact/demense/manse or a person's Essence trait is Difficulty 2. Discovering the nature of an unfamiliar charm is Difficulty 5. He also adds his Essence in dice to any pool to penetrate magical or charm-assisted stealth.
- Analytical Modeling Intuition - 3m, 1wp, Simple, Instant:
- Counterpoint Inquisition Defense - 3m, Reflexive, Instant:
- Mind-Hand Manipulation - 10m, Simple, Indefinite: Dr. Gessler may move objects with his mind. This ability has a Dexterity equal to his Willpower and a Strength equal to his Essence. He wields this with Occult for all related abilities. It also grants him attacks, detailed above. Wielding a weapon with this ability inflicts a -3 Accuracy on the attack. Also, whenever he makes an attack that deals 2 or more levels or lethal damage, he may spend 1wp to inflict a Crippling amputation of his choice.
- Unseen Force Application - --m, Permanent: Dr. Gessler's Mind-Hand attacks become invisible. They may notice his attack with a (Wits+Awareness, Diff 4) roll as a miscellaneous action. Mortals may not block these, and are at -3 DV to Dodge them. Essence-Wielders are at -2 to defend against them.
- Force-Suppression Barrier - 4m, Reflexive, One Scene: Dr. Gessler gains a force-field made of his anima (glowing at 8-10 display or invisible, as preferred), granting him a shield that adds his Essence to his DVs. Also, Mind-Hand attacks are DV -0 with this active.
- Will-Crushing Force - --m, Permanent: Dr. Gessler may, on a successful hit with Mind Hand, drain one point of willpower instead of dealing damage.
- Counter-Conceptual Interposition - 5m, Reflexive, Instant: Dr. Gessler may perfectly parry any attack aimed at him. If he makes creative stunts with the effects manifested by this charm, he may receive a cost-break on the charm. The cost to use this charm increases by 5m if the attack is supplemented by a charm he hasn't seen before (Diff 5 Intelligence+Occult to understand). This charm may not defend against surprise attacks, and costs 10m to activate if another charm made it unexpected.
- Ego-Infused Pattern Primacy - --m, Permanent: Whenever Dr. Gessler is the target of a Shaping effect he does not approve of, his self reverts to normal after one minute, during which he suffers a -1 internal penalty to all non-reflexive actions. He may pay 2m to heal this as a reflexive action.
- Wholeness Rightly Assumed - --m, Permanent: Dr. Gessler may heal himself of damage with Ego-Infused Pattern Primacy, each interval of healing repairing one level of bashing (for 3m)or lethal damage (for 5m). He may also reflexively heal himself of a Crippling, Sickness, or Poison effect.
- Pattern-Reassertion Touch - 15m, 1wp, Simple, Until Completed: Dr. Gessler may extend the benefits of Ego-Infused Pattern Primacy to anyone he touches with this charm.
- Loom-Snarling Deception - (10 - Essence)m Simple, Indefinite: Dr. Gessler creates a perfect disguise and matching destiny. Can only be pierced by non-excellency charms, in which case an appropriate roll-off occurs, adding (Essence) successes for the user of Loom-Snarling Deception. Does not disguise Essence (which is a separate charm).
