Background

A young woman once lived in a small town east of Thorns, who knew the son of the local blacksmith. His name was Jon Douglass, and he was a tall, handsome young man with lots of rippling muscles everywhere that made young women, especially this one, drool. She knew she wouldn't have a chance with him, with the other girls mooning over him, unless she turned to other means. She researched a spell that would summon a being that could give her the power to seduce the burly blacksmith and summoned it on a moonless night.

Malfeas had been waiting for such a summons ever since he'd claimed the Exaltations from the Ebon Dragon. He infused a decanthrope with one such Exaltation and sent it to answer the summons. The young woman was elated that her summons had worked, but her joy quickly turned to horror as the demon leapt on her and took her body as its own. The struggle of wills was brief, and the decanthrope soon replaced the girl. It watched Jon, looking for the opportunity he needed to Exalt.

Some years passed. Jon married and had a son. All the while, the demon, known as Ten Shadowed Faces, watched Jon closer and closer. It took several host bodies and split them up in the town to foster worship of Malfeas, to prepare him for Exaltation. The longer it watched, the more distant the other pieces of its mind became, and it began to feel the same things its host once did. It, she, now, became jealous of Jon's family and looked for ways to speed the process of bringing him into the fold of the Yozi's service, so that she could have him as her own.

It was Second Face who found the deathknights and lured them back to the town. They attacked, sacking the town and setting fire to everything to flush the living inhabitants toward the hungry dead waiting for them. Tenth Face saw Second Face's plan and got the cultists out of the town, and as many others as she could save. Even so, only a handful of people survived. She looked around for Jon, but couldn't find him in any of the buildings. She despaired, thinking that Second Face had ruined all of her plans and killed a great man, until she saw him run past her, toward the edge of town. His wife was in tow, but she was faltering. When she fell to the blades of the deathknights, Jon kept running, blinded by fear.

Tenth Face found him on a hill overlooking the burning town, sobbing into his hands. He'd realized what had happened, and how he'd failed to protect his wife out of his own insensate panic. He was a huge man, skilled with a hammer. He should have helped everyone fight their way free. He looked up at the sadly smiling face of Tenth Face, a girl he'd known for years, and who had been a good friend. He took her offered hand as she told him she could give him the power to fight off the deathknights and make up for his mistakes. He just had to accept, and he'd always be strong enough to protect everyone he loved.

He awoke in the burnt out ruins of his forge to the expectant faces of the survivors of the town, who had become the first members of the Church of Jon the Smith in the intervening days. He had changed from the young man they once knew, growing impossibly larger and more muscular, several parts of his body changing drastically, and his hair falling out. He could also hear the tired voice of Tenth Face, the girl who'd given him this power, in the back of his mind. His people looked up at him like a messiah, sent to save them from the deathknights. They asked him to lead them, to guide them, and he agreed, however reluctantly.

Appearance

Jon Brasstooth is a giant of a man. He stands almost ten feet tall, and nearly half that across at the shoulders. His skin is bronzed from years spent in the forge, and is almost completely hairless now, save for his eyebrows. His eyes are charcoal black, and underneath heavy brows, matching his warm, somewhat sad smile. His head is thick, blunt, and bullet-shaped, which matches many of his other features. He rarely wears anything more than tough leather pants, preferring shirtlessness in the heat of the forge. His most notable feature, and the one he takes his name from, is his brass teeth; every single one of them has been painstakingly replaced by brass replicas during his time in the Chrysalis.

They always attack Jon first. Those affected by this may resist it by spending a number of Willpower equal to Jon's (Essence). Any intimacies he holds that Malfeas does not approve are also targets of this effect as if they were Jon.

Backgrounds

  • Artifact 4 (Green Iron Heart)
  • Artifact 3 (Fourfold Demon Arm)
  • Demonic Familiar 3 (Nine Faces)
  • Artifact 2 (Test of Skill)
  • Unwoven Coadjutor 1 (Tenth-Face) - Tenth Face is the last of Ten Shadowed Faces' body/personalities. She was the one who'd harboured Jon's Exaltation, and remains immensely proud of this fact. Despite herself, itself, she has been changed by her time with Jon, and has come to love him, though she's never told him outright. She feels guilty for changing him so, despite her duty and her nature as a demon, and wonders what other changes might be in store for her the longer she stays with Jon. She wonders if she's done right by him, if merging with him was the right thing to do. She's afraid of the changes that her time with mortals has made on her, the feelings she's come to know, and the new perspectives she's gained.
  • Cult 1 (Church of Jon the Smith) The Church of Jon the Smith is very small, made up of a few longtime Yozi cultists and several more recent converts. It's leader is a thin, fiery young man who looks many times older than he should. His fiery disposition is tempered by the matronly village chief who is the true power in the cult, and who herself is a recent convert.
  • Backing 1 (Malfean Cults)
  • Influence 1 (Malfeas' Progeny)

Mutations

  • Huge: (+2) Jon gains +2 Strength and Stamina, and a -0 and -1 Health Level.
  • Strange Appetites: (-2) - Jon feels a ghoulish hunger for the flesh of the undead. He must ingest at least one mouthful every (Base Stamina) days, or take a -1 penalty to all actions and a -1 penalty to all physical stats until he eats again. This is a disgusting act, one that is slowly wearing down the man's

Charms and Combos

Charms

  • Hardened Devil Body - --m, Permanent: Jon gains three -2 Health Levels and one -4 Health Level.
  • 1st Malfean Excellency - 1m+, Reflexive, Instant: Jon may add up to (Attribute+Ability) dice to one Malfean-themed roll, at the cost of 1m per die.
  • By Pain Reforged - 1hl, Reflexive, One Scene: Jon ignores all wound penalties from bashing, and he does not fall unconscious when reduced to Incapacitated with bashing wounds.
  • Scar-Writ Saga Shield - --m, Permanent: Jon's Lethal soak is increased to his full Stamina, and he gains Bashing Hardness equal to his Stamina.
  • Pathetic Distraction Rebuke - 3m, Reflexive, Instant: Jon ignores all penalties to his Parry DV for one attack, and may add the greatest wound penalty he suffers as a bonus to his PDV so long as he has By Pain Reforged active, and may block any attack unarmed without a stunt.
  • Invulnerable Wounding Futility - 3m, Reflexive (Step 9), Instant: Jon catches an attack on his mighty body and sends the shock of the of impact back into the weapon, destroying nonmagical projectiles. Attackers in close combat suffer bashing damage equal to (Jon's Soak - the raw damage of the attack), which cannot be lower than his Essence or the raw damage of the attack. The attack may be soaked normally, but is considered unblockable and undodgeable. Jon cannot use this attack if he has dodged it, and completely parried attacks use the raw damage unmodified by attack successes.
  • Ablation of Brass and Fire - 4m, Reflexive, Instant: Jon steps into the path of an attack or hazard, perfectly parrying it with his massiveness. This cannot be used in any place that is not built up by humans in any way.
  • Factual Determination Analysis - 2m, Reflexive, Instant: Jon takes a written or spoken statement and breaks it down to find if it is a lie, either in part or in whole. Jon adds his Essence in bonus successes should the statement be backed by Charms or other magic.
  • Essence-Dissecting Stare - (8-Perception/Occult)m, Simple, One Hour: Jon gains Essence Sight, allowing him to see dematerialized objects and beings and the like. He may roll (Intelligence+Occult) to identify charms and powers of creatures. Gauging the rating of an artifact/demense/manse or a person's Essence trait is Difficulty 2. Discovering the nature of an unfamiliar charm is Difficulty 5. He also adds his Essence in dice to any pool to penetrate magical or charm-assisted stealth.

Combos

  • Name - (Charms)
Description
Cost: 4m or 6m+, 1wp

Inventory

  • Fourfold Demon Arm - When not in one of its other forms, Jon's right arm looks like his normal arm, save that it's made of brass.
Hammerhand - The Hammerhand looks like his normal hand, save that it's clutching a heavy mallet with a dimly green-glowing head. The hammer's haft melds with his hand, flowing into the material and keeping it locked in place.
Spd: 5, Acc: +2, Dam: +8B/2, Def: +1, Rate: 3; O, P, +2 to Craft (Vitriol) rolls to build weaponry.
Sawhand - The Sawhand is simply an oversized circular saw held in the grip of a hand-like protrusion from a lithe, mechanical-looking arm. It's elegantly designed, but still obviously inhuman.
Spd: 5, Acc: +4, Dam: +1L, Def: +3, Rate: 4; M
Visehand - The Visehand is a massive mill-vise made of Malfean Brass. The jaws are slightly jagged on the inside, to keep what's inside from slipping free of when it's held. The rest of his arm is replaced by ugly black machinery, with pistons and gears that churn wildly to give the vise's grip preternatural speed.
Spd: 5, Acc: +1, Dam: +4L, Def: --, Rate: 2; C, P
  • Test of Skill - This wide, scaled belt was given to Jon when he entered Malfeas as his first test of forging, to judge whether the new Exalt was a suitable smith for the Reclamation. Jon tainted the starmetal belt with instruction from Nine-Faces, which disturbed him in some way that he still cannot define. He does not let the memory bother him, as its usefulness has saved his life more than once.
Soak: +8L/+9B, Hardness: 5L/5B Mobility: -1, Fatigue: 0; Reduces damage by 1 level in Step 10.
  • Green Iron Heart - Jon found this dull, copper-green organ pulsing dimly under his chest when he broke out of his chrysalis, giving him unimaginable strength of arm and body. However, the cost of this is the disgusting fuel it requires; the flesh of the undead. It's a horrible act, eating the undead, but a necessary one to sustain him. This was a carefully calculated act on Malfeas' part. A ploy in order to degrade the nobility and compassion in Jon's heart and make way for the fury that must fill it.
+4 Strength and Stamina, +2 Integrity, -1 Compassion, +1 Conviction

Nine-Faces

Nine-Faces is a huge, walking anvil. Nine faces decorate its green-iron body: Two on the top, two on each side, two on the bottom, and one on the front. There is a space on the back that is left blank, which is where Tenth Face would have gone had she not become Jon's Coadjutor. It is a surly, sullen creature that waddles behind him on four small, clawed feet at its base. It was formed from Tenth Face's other bodies when she melded with Jon, and whispers blasphemous secrets of crafting whenever the huge smith uses him.

Jon gains a +3 bonus to Craft Fire/Vitriol rolls when using Nine-Faces, and a +2 bonus to all other elemental craft rolls. He also gains a +1 bonus to other esoteric Craft rolls.
