The poor man's dollar store Emperor's Champion.

A Sword Brethren or Sword Brother, are the Black Templars equivalent to the First Company of other Chapters. Black Templar veterans are elevated to this rank and placed in separate squads where they will fight as elites, train to use Terminator Armour (they are the only Black Templars allowed to use the armour) or form a Marshal's bodyguard.

Overview[edit]

Because of their status and the shit they wear, they are exempt from training Black Templar Neophytes and unlike squads with Initiates, Neophytes will not be found in a Sword Brethren squad.

During Crusades, a Marshal can also appoint a Castellan to lead one of the Fighting Companies. This Castellan is picked from the Sword Brethren as is the case when a Castellan or Marshal is killed, the new one will be picked from the Sword Brethren.

Despite the fluff of them all wearing Terminator armour, in terms of the minis, none of them actually wear it. Why that's the case, we have no clue.

Equipment[edit]

As elites, Sword Brethren are all armed with close combat weapons like a Chainsword, Power Sword and Lightning Claws. For range, they are equipped with a Bolt Pistol. Also, judging by the looks of it, all of them seem to wear a modified Mark VII: Aquila Armour, but with more Templar aesthetics.

Crunch[edit]

In 6th Edition, these guys are more expensive Initiates (that don't score). They have the same options as initiates (1 special weapon, 1 heavy weapon Or special close combat weapon). Plus, can have "terminator Honors" to each gain an additional attack (but it's crazy expensive) and can have as many storm shields (FAQ'd to 3++ all the time, but got more expensive) as your little heart desires. I suggest you give them a skip.

That was the last time they were ever statted, as 8th Edition strangely did away with the Sword Brethren as a whole and forcing you into relying on veterans. Even in 9th Edition, there haven't been any stats for Sword Brethren...without being Primaris. These Primaris Sword Brethren, while gifted with chainswords and power swords, suffer from two massive restrictions: One is the lack of shields, making them inferior to the Bladeguard Veterans who come with relic blades and storm shields. The other issue is that their loadout options for alternative weapons is pointlessly-limited, forcing you to pick one weapon of each type (thunder hammer, twin lightning claws, power axe, power maul, and options for plasma pistol and two pyre pistols) and thus forcing a schizophrenic loadout.
