Numas is a city in Northeastern Nehekhara and is the only city in the land of the dead which can still grow food and support life. Here the dead and living coexist and visitors to the land often choose to go here to resupply and deal with angry Arabyans or grumpy and territorial men of the south.

Given it's moniker as "the scarab city", they presumably primarily worship Usirian, who's iconography tends to be Khepra Beetles and Tomb Swarms.

Overview[edit]

Numas, the Scarab City, is one of the oldest cities of the Warhammer World, and is the second city ever known to be constructed by Humans after Zandri, her sister to the far North. She was first settled due to being extremely fertile, due to being near both the Great River Vitae and the Ash River. (Ash and volcanic regions being surprisingly good for fertile soil as it includes rare minerals and elements like magnesium, calcium, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron, zinc, etc. which all help plants to grow). The city was founded by a man named Khesek, who was the successor to the founder of Zandri named Zakash. Subsequent kings proceeded to subjugate and expand the territory and quash the nomads who kept waging war on them until the side was large in both materials and manpower.

As a result, Numas became a crown jewel of Nehekhara-so much so that after the Great Catastrophe and the rise of Settra, the king first made sure to make the city his through conquest and to use the tribute of the wealthy and populous nation to further his expansions-Slaves, Gold, men and most importantly, food were all gifted to Settra and allowed him to rampage through the continent. However, hundreds of years passed and when Settra died, despite his life being artificially elongated by the mortuary cult, he could not live forever-And with him having no successor, for all of his children were scarificed to the Great Ptra to allow Nehekhara to grow prosperous again and him having long outlived his one and only true love in his wife, the time came for internal conflict and rebellion from the resentment fomented against Khmeri within Numas. For the next thousand years, Numas would be seen as the test of the King of Khmeri, as it would be conquered, revolt, reconquered, etc. until the time of Nagash, in which the city of Numas would join the city-states of Zandri, Mahrak, Lybaras and Rasetra to rid the world of the usurper's tyranny and win the favor of the gods back to the people of Nehekhara-which lasted until the alliance fell apart due to infighting over one another's wealth and titles.

After this time, and the death of her father and brothers through fatricide of one another, Queen Amunet arose, and was able to best the last of Nagash's immortals in combat. Later in life she traveled to Lamia to witness the coronation of Neferata, riding a steed for which Numas was renown for.

After her death, her descendants presumably take the throne, only to be wiped out by her grand son, Prince Apophas, who kills them and usurps the throne, but is slain in the subsequent revolt which lead him being dragged to the Temples to be judged saw his line end with him.

From there little is known of the city until the time of the Great Awakening and the end of Alcadizzar's reign, in which all of the kings of Numas awoke simultaneous and began to bicker and fight amongst each other for power until Settra-having united Khmeri, marched into Numas and put their house in order, and sent all of the lesser kings and queens back to their tombs to await orders. However, because Numas was not on the Great River Mortis when Nagash poisoned it, there never stopped being living people within Numas, and to this day people remain there awaiting orders.

At some point, Grey Seer Thanoqual sneaked into Numas and planted Night Goblin corpses in the tomb of King Phar to create a false flag attack with the Greenskins, weakening both forces but allowing the Tomb Kings to reclaim their artifacts without them knowing the schemes of the Skaven behind it-causing them to be ambushed by Thanoquol's forces, who were then subsequently assualted by the armies of King Phar's son, arriving to reinforce his father's intial war against the Greenskins. Although King Phar was assassinated by a Skaven Assassin of Clan Eshin, the Tomb Kings would ultimately defeat the skaven army and slaughtering them all except for Thanoquol, who would go on to escape with a good chunk of the warpstones. It is said to this day there lay the bones of rats used as slaves by the leaders of Numas.

Currently, the city is ruled by a Tomb Prince rather than a king-and it is likely this reason that is why he is not as ego-driven and is faithful to both his subjects and to King Settra. King Tutankhanut was only 15 when Norscans killed him while he was hunting on his chariot, throwing a javelin into his chest and doing unspeakable things to his corpse.

His father, very fond of his son and stricken by grief, ordered the Mortuary Cult to give him a lavish funeral, no cost spared. For a tomb king who tends to spend their entire life and treasury fund on themselves and their own burial due to the belief of one day rising again, this was an extremely selfless act. Believing the Gods would fashion a body of pure gold for the dead, the boy was gifted an elaborate death mask of pure gold. Risen thousands of years later, his body would be withered and his mask the only reminder of the comely face he once possessed.

After Settra's conquest, Tutankhanut began his goal, for he did not seek power like his kin, and so went to restore the Pyramids to the wonder of his youth and partaking in public work projects to ensure the survival of the living still within Numas. It was in his time that the Scythans arrived in Numas, and pledged devotion to him for his kindness and genorsity in allowing them asylum and began to worship him as a living avatar of their God, for whom they were seeking in the desert East of Araby. So beloved is the Prince that when a Scythan dies, his corpse is laid out in the desert to be bleached by the sun and cleaned by the Carrion of the desert, before being gathered up and brought before the mortuary cult so that they may serve the king after their death.
