Hive Fleet Nidhoggr
((Currently under development. Don't hurt me. This page is open to editing.))
/tg/ got tired of homebrew spess mareen chapters one day, so they decided to give the beloved Tyranids some upgrades.
Essentially lava-loving, geolithic Tyranids that deep-strike via meteors, hibernate under the planet's surface, and emerge as massive, ash-spewing, magma-gushing towers of flesh and organic crystal.
Tyranid Evolutionary Motivation: Fire hurts. Let's make it stop doing that.
Fluff
Physical Description: Identical to other Tyranid sub-species in biology, with the addition of various pores that secrete an obsidian-like substance over their bodies. The substance has been known to withstand melta bombs and flamer damage. Venom glands that are either normally dormant or inactive in some of the larger sub-species have been adapted to release a dual-chemcial reaction, known to react with hydrogen and oxygen in the air with pyroclasmic effects.
Mycetic Spores are disused for Deepstriking. Instead, they invade the planet via meteor storms in order to remain inconspicous, allowing the Tyranids to infest the crust of the planet with Monstrous Creatures who remain in a hibernation state until activated by the Hive Mind. The deeply seeded planet is activated, causing tectonic damage on a local, and depending on planetary faultlines, global scale. The awakened Tyranids are often likened to "Volcanoes and mountains born upon the backs of massive creatures", who proceed with incinerating the planet before consuming it completely. As other Tyranid fleets have been known to scour planets of life, the Nidhoggr Hive Tendril has been known to eradicate whole systems from existence, hence earning their title based on the ancient devourer of the World Tree.
Crunchy Bits AKA DELISHUSS BIOMASS
Tyranids have access to "Flame Sprayer" biomorph, which is essentially a Flamer. Available to Warriors and Tyrant Guard.
Genestealers, Raveners, and Lictors have "Hot Body" which adds additional armor piercing and an extra point of armor. They also have "Magma Claws", which increases armor piercing and damage the more rounds they are in combat with a unit or squad.
Carnifexes and Hive Tyrants both have access to "Magma Blast" that has a large blast template and does an additional round of damage to anything in the area at the end of the next turn. They also have access to the "Flame Belcher" biomorph, which has similar stats to a dual-linked Flamer.
Please note that this is not a classic Nid army. It is supposed to allow you to field more Monstrous Creatures, whilst balancing it out by getting rid of the classic Gaunt spam/tarpit. Nidhoggr is a shock and awe style Hive Fleet, where Gaunts are regarded as weak and pointless compared to the sheer terror inspiring might of the larger bioforms.
Special Units
Magma Corer (Apparently once a real Nid unit, but disused by other Hive Fleets)
Magma Corers, large creatures that appear to be related to the Carnifex, dig and dissolve their way through the sedimentary and igneous rocks down to the mantle and the magma. No specimens of this creature have yet been procured for study by the station, so detailed analysis of biological countermeasures to extremes of temperature are speculative at this time. The residual minerals exhibit molecular disruption similar to that found on Tyran. Presumably these creatures utilise some psychic matter-manipulation or agitation to facilitate this amazing feat. As they tunnel, they secrete a vitrifying gel which coats the tube and prevents its collapse until the tap is deep enough to begin expelling the compressed gases. In areas where magma is sufficiently caustic, the low viscosity lava will typically erupt releasing huge quantities of dissolved gases. In areas where the lava is acidic and viscous, explosive eruptions and pyroclastic flows have occurred. This results in significant loss of life to all indigenous creatures within miles of the occurrence. Some Tyranid creatures could survive around the periphery of the blast and gas cloud but the intense heat is sufficient to cause the demise of any caught within the cloud. It is unknown if the Magma Corers survive once they reach the 35-40 km depth at which this process is initiated. The tenacity of Tyranid creatures is remarkable but none should be capable of surviving such conditions; it would seem to be suicidal even for such creatures. The ability of the Tyranids to breed a creature whose sole known purpose results in its death is quite astounding.
