This article is should be mostly about Victoria 2 because nobody cares about the first game
"Victoria: An Empire under the Sun" is a Video game developed and published by Paradox Interactive. It (somehow) gained an expansion "Victoria: Revalationslutions" despite being a commercial failure. The expansion tried to emulate the 1844-1848 riots for Democracy across Europe, but spectacularly failed because Crunch made sure Fluff got borked(a few milipoints of awareness and militancy won't do shit when it can be healed with a handwave of welfare). The only redeeming factor it had was that the United Kingdom could be surpassed with proper planning and genuine focus on reforms, even the Ottomans could end up 2#, and may the Gods have mercy on those who aren't China if she gets random technologies that make it "civilized"(Industrialized by Western Standards). There were quite a bit of random events of which some of that could change the flow of history, such as Franco-Prussian War fizzling and Germany staying forever smol and divided.
Then the sequel came along, and everything was fucked. Enjoy a 3d remake that NO EMPIRE EVER CHANGES RANK. EVER. Even if you pour gas on the laptop and light it.
Europe: The Game Electric BoogalooVictoria 2 is a Strategy focusing on a period from 1836 to 1936 Where can play as any country in the world.
Fun fact: People actually think, this is a strategy game. It is not. It is a numbers simulator with a overlay of moving units around to confuse people.
Seriously, even the name Victoria is diverted from the Queen Victoria, which herself is present only as a event paragraph in the game. Altrough the focus lies on europe and somewhat the Americas, it is still possible to play as an Uncivilized nation like Zulu or Vietnam.
(Just be prepared to wait the first half of the game for westernisation and pray, that no european nation eats you in the meantime)
The game is designed to have Great Britain always as the worlds Big Dog, so dont even try to surpass it. There has to be a major fuck up happening, if GB is not the Number 1 on the scoreboards. Thats why the game is considered as one of the most railroaded games by paradox, since GB will be always Nr. 1, the Union will always beat up the South (the american civil war is hard coded to happen, dont try to avoid it) and Prussia will rape the shit out of Austria and be the GERMANYBLOB.
And the Ottomans get raped by everyone else, don't bother fixing it like Victoria 1. (Heh, remember EU IV, Suleiman? Shouldn't have strangled Mustapha...)
But on the other hand, you won't get the huge clusterfuck CK II is.
Also, it is one of the Paradox games, where it is not possible to make a world conquest, because the way the AI reacts to agressive expansion. To win, you have to invest in things that give the most "Prestige". (It is absolutely normal for all of the world powers to declare containment wars on you because you annexed a shithole country in bumfuck nowhere of south east Asia, killing a nation in europe has much worse consequences)
The main body of the game is the economical-political part. You have the industrial revolution kicking in and this changes the whole world economy, as well as start making the peasants think for themselves once they have some free time and ask for elections. Later Oil, chemistry and electrical will play a role.
(Seriously, I won't even try to explain the economical details here, it will take a own wiki for that.)
Only to recommend, if you have a huge numbers-boner, 'cause that is, what the game is in core about.
Protips
- Don't even bother playing without the A House Divided and Hear of Darkness expansions.
- If you have only ever played EU4, get ready to feel stupid.
- If you've never played a grand strategy, get ready to feel stupid.
- Either don't try to understand how the global economy works or go mad trying.
- Status Quo is God.
