The term 'titan' is used in many games to refer to something huge and impressive. It's always a metaphor for the godlike monsters of Greek Mythology that preceded the god-type gods of Zeus et al. The adjective "titanic" is synonymous with "fuckhuge," "Jesus that's big" and "did you say iceberg?"

British Ships

The RMS Titanic was a luxury ocean liner that was the largest vessel to date. A medium-passage ticket cost about as much as a normal person's wages for six months. It was called "unsinkable," and "too big to fail," much like Enron, the Vietnam War, Communism, and the Star Wars Imperial space stations "Death Star" and "Death Star Mk II."

Dungeons & Dragons

  • Original Dungeons & Dragons had them as not-ugly, not-stupid giants in the Greyhawk supplement.
  • Advanced Dungeons & Dragons had them in the Monster Manual, 17-22 hit dice and 7d6 points of damage on a normal attack, could cast any magic-user or cleric spells as if level 15, had eight psionic powers but were immune to psionic attack, and invisible at-will. They looked like beautiful 18-foot tall Greek giants. Levitate or ethereal twice a day.
  • AD&D2 had them in the Monstrous Compendium #8 (nobody I knew kept buying the MCs after #3, no idea what 2E titans are like.)
  • Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition had them in the Monster Manual as 25-foot perfect Greek-god humanoids with a dozen at-will arcane & divine spells as if level 20, and had a challenge rating of 21 (the Tarrasque is a 20). Levitate at-will, ethereal or gate twice a day.
  • Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition uses titans as giants that are more elemental-y and 3 levels higher than normal giants. And some how "necrotic" became an elemental thing. They're even uglier than giants, and these titans can't levitate. They were created by the Primordials for the sole purpose of wrecking everyone's shit, which is the only reason the Primordials ever created anything.

End of War

Hitler was, and is, a tough act to follow.

In End of War, Titans are walking armadas of recycled "Super Heavy Dreadnought Battleships" invented by Hitler in 1946. They also appear in later series as walking HQ's with plasma rays and railcannons to fuck everything until its bleeding and crying

Avalon Hill

A wargame of recruiting monsters so you can recruit bigger monsters, and then catching up to other player's stacks of monsters so you could fight it out on sub-maps. You want to find and kill your opponent's "titan" monsters, which are as powerful as how many points that player has acquired so far. A classic of the monster slug-a-thon genre of boardgames.

In Mechaton Titan, "Titans" are the largest class of unit that can be made. We're talking LEGO giant robots that are bigger than your head.

Warhammer 40,000

In Warhammer 40,000, Titans are gigantic warmachines. Basically a giant fucking ripoff of Power Rangers. Influenced by the anime and manga about giant robot mechs, except they got 5 times the grimdarkness. These titans come in Big, Bigger, Bigger than the Last One, Damn that's One Big Mecha, and XBAWKS HUEG.

They also tend to fuck up your shit. By at least times 5.

To elaborate: Titans are the biggest freaking land machines most races have at their disposal in the GRIM DARKNESS OF THE 41ST MILLENNIUM.

How big are they? Actually, that varies depending on the depiction. For the most part, think of a giant mecha that is 15-80 meters tall. Your typical troopers on the tabletop are half as tall as your finger is long -- a Titan miniature requires both of your hands to lift. Some Titan minis are bigger than your head, which makes the name "miniature" really a misnomer. Sometimes we have particular class that even has a complete city block (in the form of a gargantuan ornate castle) built ON ITS SHOULDERS. It also has rules in Warhammer 40K. To say the "miniature" will be taller than you is an understatement.

How powerful? Take a couple of Yamato-class battleships and add More Dakka and a bunch of other shooty bits. Oh, and some of them have enough nuclear firepower to devestate an entire biosphere of a large island. They have almost enough dakka.

How scary? The apocalypse is walking towards you; start praying to whatever holy god you believe in and hope it uses the bolter cannon first, cause that flamethrower shit hurts. Though only some of them have models, and you can only get them from Forge World, so, they cost an arm and leg in terms of real money.

There is also a planet called Titan (technically a moon, but it's bigger than motherfucking Mercury) in the Terran system. This is where the Grey Knights' highly classified fortress-monastery is, though for most of the Imperium it's just an annoying area of restricted voidspace right in the middle of the Imperium's second largest naval base - the Saturnian moon system. Malcador the Sigillite once moved this planet to the Warp for one year, using nothing but his own mind.

Halo

A Covenant Harvester, now if the UNSC ever met a live and active one...

While the UNSC of the Halo universe has nothing close to a Titan, their Covenant buddies have plenty of vehicles that would fit in the Titan or Super-Heavy range. The first is the Scarab which at first glance look like an over-sized spider tank that is as big as a Reaver-Class Titan, but due to Halo's hard-on for anything large, they are instead classified as a Super-Heavy tank. This Scarab is armed with a single mining beam that in fluff, could vaporize the planets crust to get to the goodies (They are a mining vehicle anyway) and a single Anti-Air turret, that is so slow a Terminator would most likely dodge it, but being fair it is gameplay after-all.

If that isn't enough for you then the Super-Scarab from Halo Wars which would play as the role of a Imperiums Warlord-Class Titan, nothing that much is known about this monster except they have an EXBOXHUGE F*CK-OFF Lazer that can probably turn a Baneblade into a molten jello, and that it could tank several dozen under-charged MAC's when it was still under-construction...meaning that these walkers are tough enough to take over a dozen beatings from a fellow Titan, which is very impressive from a Game notorious for incompetent vehicle designs. These Super-Scarabs are so tough that literally nothing in the UNSC weaponry could even scratch it, and that is talking about the one under-construction, the fact they even need a 3.5km long Colony-ship that has been re-purposed as a warship to even scratch the damn thing, shows you how tough these motherf*ckers are! Oh, and did I mention that you need that Colony-ship to scratch the one that is still under-construction? so we still aren't even sure how god-damn tough these things are! But whatever it really was, we at /tg/ can assure you that the UNSC needs a new pair of brown-pants whenever they fight one.

Furthermore the Covies also have the Harvester which nothing is known except that it makes the previous Super-Scarab look like a Grot in comparison, soooo...they might be the Imperator-Class for the Covenant. But wait! there's more! the Covenant also have their own version of a Tau Manta, called the Lich! except while the Manta look reasonably awesome, the Lich look like an aborted fetus of a Tyranid Harridan and a Scarab, Gah! it is hideous, search them at your own risk and get some vomit bags just in case.
