The Chainrasp is the rank-and-file troop of the Nighthaunt, being described as the most "base and pathetic" of them (presumably only outranking the Spirit Hosts). Their crime in life was just that - crime. They were the most vicious of criminals, prisoners who died bound in chains. As such, they lug these same chains, manacles, and iron balls with them around in the afterlife. As previously stated, Chainrasps are very much lesser spirits, being held together exclusively by Nagash's will and their own spite towards the living. They are so depressing to be around that, if in any given area for a long enough period of time, they leave behind a spiritual frostbite of sorts - sapping the energy of their opponents.

Their unit leaders are called Dreadwardens, and they exist to exacerbate the spite and torment felt by the Chainrasps. They hold comically large candelabras, which casts a light that the Chainrasps - in their ghostly blindness - believe to be the light at the end of the tunnel. Ironically, this light only further binds them to their fates, meaning that they are doomed to spend eternity groping for freedom that will never come. Prisoners in life, and prisoners in death, too.
