Background
The air left Alan's lungs in a surprised woof as the ironwood club found its mark; he staggered back from Cort, barely keeping his grip on his own club.
"I never did think much of you," the other sneered, "but I always thought you had more guts than this," Fardo's club was already in motion, the words a distraction. Alan managed to get his club up in time to block the rib-shattering strike - barely. The wood vibrated painfully in his hands, and some logical part of his mind that was detatched enough to think about such things chastised him for not wearing gloves. Or bringing a better weapon. Alan did his best to steady his guard as staggered back, breath still hitching in his lungs as he feebly warded off blows.
"If you won't commit," Fardo said, sounding casual despite his exertion, "you can't win." A final blow took Alan's club from his hand. The would-be gunslinger took a step back. Fardo's sneer told a story far more eloquent and complete than any words he might've spoken.
The ironwood club came blurring towards Alan's left eye from above. It was the last clear thing that eye would ever see.
