Mind Lords of the Last Sea is a splatbook for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition that fleshes out the setting of Dark Sun. It also has the dubious honor of being one of the most controversial splats for the setting, after the Prism Pentad tie-ins.
What is MLotLS?
This is one of only two splatbooks that peels back the sands of mystery and reveals some of the world that lies beyond the Tablelands where the core Dark Sun books are set, in this specific case revealing the territory that lies beyond the Thunder Mountains.
What's the deal with the Last Sea?
Far to the north of the Tablelands, guarded by the perpetually fire-struck grasslands of the Burning Plains in one direction and the mighty Thunder Mountains in the other, lies the greatest treasure of Athas: the last known body of free-flowing water in existence. A sea of true saltwater, full of fish and aquatic life, rather than a barren desert of silt dunes. This is the realm of Marnita, home to Athas' last lizardfolk - adapted fully to a life underwater - and to a peaceful culture of mingled humans, elves and dwarves. But this peace has a price; living with the paranoia-fueled eternal vigilance of ancient psionicists known as the Mind Lords.
Why is it so controversial?
Between creating a lingering sea and revealing that one of the genocides ordered by Rajaat failed, "Mind Lords" is generally hated amongst more old-school Dark Sun fans for providing too hopeful a feel for the setting.
