Esoterist Consuls are a type of proto-Chaos Sorcerers that was prominent throughout the Horus Heresy.
Overview
These traitors have not yet gone full yee-yee-ass Khornholio like those of the Possessed Marines and most likely came from heretical Librarians. Given their name, they may have come from the Consuls, specifically the Librarian branch which will make sense.
As they dabble in the warp, free of the Emprah's restrictions from the Council of Nikaea, these traitors inadvertently goes full Palpatine; drugged on Warp Dust as they get supercharged by the power overtaking them. It is no surprised that they quickly embraced these mind-expanding secrets, spread by robed conjurers through the rituals of the Warrior Lodges – but as the Heresy progressed, even Loyalist psykers drank deep from wells of outlawed knowledge and also got high on magical LSD. In battle, Loyalist Esoterists deploy their arcane learnings to weaken Corrupted foes and other beings of the warp, while Traitors gain the ability to conjure forth hordes of Daemonic allies to do their bidding. Crunchwise however, this is more of a Chaos-aligned unit.
Of course, we know what fate were to happen to them after the Heresy. The more fortunate ones became full fledged Chaos Sorcerers. The less fortunate ones however...
For some reason, each Esoterist Consul wore the much sought after Mark VI: Beakie Armour and is armed with a Force Staff and a sidearm.
Crunch
From what we know, these guys have one unique psychic action. Void Darts – a precursor of Doom Bolts and a powerful psychic weapon that tears open reality itself. With a dozen shots that can chain into extra hits through Deflagrate, it’s nasty enough – but it also wounds Daemons on a 2+ and forces them to re-roll Invulnerable Saves.
