Earthmote is a term originating from Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition for "flying islands" and all other forms of physical, usually earth-based terrain that have decided to defy gravity and start hovering in mid-air, if not actually flying around. The concept is very old, dating back in D&D itself to at least the days of Mystara and the Plane of Air, but the term was coined in 4e, since earthmotes were decided as the major terrain feature used to signal that the Nentir Vale wasn't your old-school TSR setting.
