Warhammer Legends is GW's way of supporting your favourite Special Character without having to actually put them in the next book. This mainly takes the edge off of ruining characters or units each update. But at the same time, it relegates them to the back corner. So, if you wanted to run Vlad von Carstein in AoS, you can. But if you want to see a real update for Vlad von Carstein? Too bad. Many choices for the initial Legends category are shocking and give us some in-sight as to what GW is thinking about, strangely.

The Good

  • Bretonnian players can field their special characters now in AoS.
  • Tomb King's player can field their named character as well.
  • Same with the Empire.
  • Hell, the same with (almost) every faction.
  • You won't have to worry about Units or Characters being completely squatted.
  • Keywords for the old factions are in.
  • You don't have to worry about cutting off certain weapons from your models.

The Bad

  • For the Fantasy armies that were squatted, there is reference to their units, but nothing in regards to rules.
  • 40k players now have to dismount their HQ choices, as none of them can use any personal transportation.
  • Legion of the Damned are now in the Legends category.
  • Fantasy models do not have point values. As of General's Handbook 2020 most Legends Units have Points again (even Gitmob Grots). Warscrolls have yet to be seen though.
  • Fantasy models tend to lack any synergy with your big armies because of incompatible keywords (See Lizardmen vs Seraphon, High Elves vs Lumineth Realm-Lords).
  • Honour Guard is in.
  • Almost ALL 30k models including the Contemptor and Leviathan dreadnoughts and most of forgeworld Deamon Engines

The Ugly

  • Games Workshop has made it a point to say that anything in the "Legends" category isn't automatically allowed in Matched Play. Meaning your opponent can simply say: "No Legends," and there goes most of your White Scars list. They have even left it up to event organizers to determine whether to allow Legends or not.
  • It is also apparent that GW wants to distance themselves from the 40k 7th Edition Meta by getting rid of everyone's mounted HQ choices. Or maybe just gimp those armies they don't like since the Primaris Chaplain is confirmed to have a biker model coming out sometime soon.
