Snake

Snakes, Serpents, or Sneks are limbless reptiles that resemble scaled noodles that first emerged during the late Jurassic period. Since prehistory they have caught the imagination of mankind for being pretty cool and/or cute.

Snakes are the products of evolutionary min-maxing. They have a low metabolism, long slinky bodies that can quietly creep about terrain really well and suddenly lunge out while dump-stating arms and legs. Some of them have really powerful poisons, others have the strength to crush bones and some are really good swimmers.

They have appeared in mythology and religion in many different roles. They are associated with evil, greed, and deceit as well as cleverness, knowledge, and healing. In the Bible it was a snake that introduced evil to mankind.

Dungeons & Dragons

These are special types of snakes that appear in D&D. Giant versions of regular snakes can be found in Dire Animal. Snakes combined with people fall under Serpentfolk.

• Boalisk: Just like a regular boa constrictor except meeting its gaze causes mummy rot.

• Herald Serpent: Intelligent, talking, black and gold snakes that act as the messengers of the Serpent Lords of Al-Qadim. Their venom causes temporary amnesia.

• Heway: White desert snakes that poison any water they swim in. They poison wells and oases and then wait to devour the paralyzed victims. They also have a hypnotic gaze.

• Messenger Snake: Winged snakes used by Zhentarim wizards to carry parcels. They have chameleon skin and venom that causes paralysis for 1d4 hours.

• Serpent Vine: A magical combination of a snake and a plant, with a selection of mind control and illusion spells.

• Shadow Asp: Pitch-black snakes whose venom slowly turns you into a shadow. From Ravenloft.

• Viper Tree: Trees with snakes for branches. Found in Azzagrat, the realm of Demon Lord Graz'zt.

• Winged Snake: Native to the jungles of Al-Qadim, where they eat fruit and act as pollinators. They have an electric breath weapon.
