A level (sometimes also called "rank" or equivalent terms) is an abstract measure of power in a role-playing game. Characters gain levels most commonly through experience points which are accumulated through events and defeating foes. In general, the higher of a level a character has, the more things it can defeat and accomplish. A character may have an overall level, but can also have levels in certain skills and careers, especially in systems where characters can specialize into one or more classes.
