Hyperion is an all round cool dude and possibly one of the sanest psykers in the 40k setting, he is also a Grey Knight Librarian. Known for breaking a daemon Primarch's blade, trolling one of the Imperium's most respected chapter masters, chilling with two Inquisitors and joining a legendary brother of demi-gods (not necessarily in that order). Not to be confused with the Borderlands 2 corporation. Or the Imperial knight house(or, you know, the Greek myth).
History
Travels with an Inquisitor
Born Zael Effernetti, a low hiver on the Eustis Majoris. Addicted to flect, a psychoactive drug, Zael did whatever he could to score his next hit. It was by chance that Inquisitor Ravenor and his followers were on the planet at the same time, investigating the flect trade as part of a larger conspiracy. They came across Zael and roped him into using him as a means to infiltrate the local flect trade. It was at this time Zael's latent psychic powers came to be seen. Somehow the regular round ups of pskyers had missed him. Ravenor, unlike many Inquisitors, did not BLAM him without a second thought but instead took him under his wing, hoping to use his talents for his own means. He had discovered Zael was a mirror psyker, able to passively pick up messages and then resend them - just the kind of talent an Inquisitor could appreciate.
There was another reason Ravenor held onto Zael. He suspected a powerful daemon known as Slyte, which was due to manifest soon, would use the boy as his vessel and so Ravenor thought to use this knowledge to outwit the daemon and at least deny him his host. For this matter Ravenor had the pariah (non-pskyer) of his retinue keep watch over the boy with orders to kill him at first sign of daemonic possession.
But Zael in turn knew something, he sensed that it was Ravenor's acolyte who would manifest the daemon. So faking a coma and somehow managing to telepathically communicate with the non-psychic blank, Zael outwitted the daemon and aided in his banishment.
Later after Ravenor was declared a rogue and a radical by the Inquisition his retinue was broken up. Zael fell into the 'care' of Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor Lilith (lol what a name) Abfequarn.
Joining the Grey Knights
Seeing Zael's potential, instead of burning him alive, Lilith handed Zael over to the Grey Knights as a new recruit. After going through literally soul razing tests, he was deemed an acceptable recruit for the chapter and mind wiped of all his memories, even his original name and given a new one, Hyperion.
Geez, talk about it being an honour all you want, you just erased the poor guy's memories and forced him to join (the other option being a bullet in the head). Talk about having a hard deal. Though to be fair, it is strongly hinted that most Grey Knights are created this way. Such is but a small part of the great cost to be able to battle against the mind-breaking horrors of the warp.
After much training Hyperion was made a full battle brother of the chapter and assigned to be his squad's pyrokine (a master of psychic flame). A special branch of the chapter's librarians known as the Prognosticars had strong hopes Hyperion would in time join their ranks but he still had much training and learning ahead of him.
First War of Armageddon and the Trolling of Angron
Barely had Hyperion had time to warm his suit of new power armour when he and a Grey Knights force assisting an Ordo Malleus investigation discovered that a massive invasion of the important world Armageddon was planned by the traitor Primarch Angron, lord of the World Eaters Chaos Space Marines. Responding to an urgent plea for assistance from Logan Grimnar, Chapter Master of the Space Wolves, the Grey Knights teleported right into the midst of the chaotic host and directly attacked Angron and his Bloodthirster bodyguards.
What followed was a battle that alone could make fan boys weep and be worthy of a Games Workshop summer campaign by itself. Hyperion's squad battled Angron and was made into chow by the traitor and his giant black blade. Hyperion, showing what a true hero can do, stood over a wounded battle brother trying to protect him. Using all his power to strike at the fallen primarch, Hyperion shattered the dark sword of the daemon prince and instantly earned near limitless respect points for his act. Let's remind the reader that he was barely out of training at the time and facing a foe even the other Primarchs would struggle against.
For this act, the Space Wolves gave him the cool title of 'Bladebreaker', and is known to make Sisters of Battle swoon in his mere presence.
Trouble with the Wolves
Alas for all the good stuff, heroes must go through hard times as well (some universal horrible rule).
After the first war for Armageddon, the Inquisition decided that everyone who had seen Chaos, both the Imperial Guard and the normal citizens, may already be carrying chaos taint within their souls, a possibility that the Holy Orders could not overlook. Compounding their fears, the citizens had all born witness to the Grey Knights presence on the planet, a Chapter of space marines that is supposed to be completely secret. In the face of this breach and potential for taint, the Inquisition reacts as the Inquisition has always been known to react when it comes to potential taint. All the Imperial Guard regiments, all the Imperial citizens, likely tens of thousands of innocent men and women who has been exposed to the battle, would face absolute Inquisitorial sanction.
Naturally the Space Wolves were not too happy with this turn of events, as they had just spent months dying to protect the very same citizens the Inquisition was trying to silence. They in turn decided to spirit the humans away and send them to the far corners of the Imperium. The Inquisition vowed to hunt them down and even ordered the Grey Knights to fire on Space Wolves trying to intervene.
And so began a series of increasingly tense stand-offs and cat-and-mouse chases as both sides tried to outwit the other, and the Wolves striking back (twice as hard in the balls).
The Inquisition, not happy about anyone (even a respected First Founding chapter which has defended the Imperium for thousands of years and by rights shouldn't be able to touch with a barge pole Heresy! Inquisitorial Authority is absolute, no one other than the God-Emperor of Mankind is above question) defying them, blockaded Fenris with hundreds of ships and threatened to raze the entire planet if the Wolves did not yield and undertake a crusade of penance.
Stuck in the middle of this nonsense, Hyperion (favored by the Inquisitor in charge (and by apparently all the female members of said Inquisitor's retinue, who want to do copious amounts of delicious heresy to him) was forced to repel a Space Wolves boarding action onto the flagship led by none other than Logan Grimnar himself. The Grey Knights are not without their own pride, and Hyperion refused to surrender the ship to the Wolves. In am one-on-one fight, cheered on by members of the Space Wolves First Company, Hyperion, true to his new title, cracks and very nearly breaks Grimnar's ancient relic axe. Though in the end, Hyperion is of course soundly beaten, the Chapter Master remembering his title. Forced to be one of the diplomats to Fenris, Hyperion meets Bjorn the Fell-handed and instantly became a fan boy for life. Unfortunately during this time the bulk of the Wolves returned to Fenris and proceeded to kick the ass of the Inquisition fleet above their homeworld, including killing the Inquisitor in charge (which is probably for the best since the Inquisitor was hopeless and way out of his depth). Bjorn teleported right into the middle of intense fighting in orbit and ordered all to stand the fuck down, then proceeded to dictate what was going to happen. The Space Wolves would cease their challenging of the Inquisition but in return the Inquisition would never again darken the skies over Fenris or war would follow.
Interestingly, on return to Titan, Hyperion reflected that he agreed with neither side of the conflict totally, seeing both sides as having flawed arguments. He tended to fall in more with the Inquisition's pragmatic approach over the Wolves' idealism but he saw how heavy-handed the Inquisition's response had been. This instantly makes him quite likable because while he may follow orders like a soldier, he is shown to have his own opinions and to realize his superiors are being dicks, thus proving he has the greatest trait forgotten about in the 40k setting: that he can think. Thus he is one of only four Grey Knights that /tg/ considers notably awesome. The other 3 being Brother-Captain Stern, Castellan Crowe, and of course, Justicar Alaric.
A higher calling
Eventually Hyperion was promoted to the Chapter's Librarius and soon began training to be a member of the Prognosticars. Enjoying a lengthy career, by the end of the 41st millennium, he was beginning to train new brothers to be Prognosticars. His BFFs is his former battle brother from his old squad, who is now a Grey Knight Techmarine.
And it was by then he began sensing the galaxy was sliding into Chaos and that shit was going to get fucked up.....
