Back when they were still living necrontyr, Ghost Arks were basicly just carts that wheel out the dead, think that Monty python "bring out your dead" skit.
During the biotransference they took a whole new GrimDark role. See most of the necrontyr didn't want to be soulless robots so it was up to the Crew of the Ghost Arks to beat them half to death and dump their tied up, broken bodies in the Ark and send them away. After a while the crew were replaced by the first Necron Warriors.
After the biotransference was done the Ghost Ark were repurposed once again to be the transport for warriors and to act as mobile repair stations.
Also looks like a pirate ship and broadsides like one too.
