It should be pointed out however that we know about bears because we likely attended school in the first world. To a dirt farming pseudo-darkage commoner it like is a DC 15 check to know where a random forest animals they have likely never seen lives.

Then again, most pre-literate cultures have rich oral traditions that teach people how to survive encounters with the various predators of their region - these are goddamn mundane bears we're talking about, not manticores or basilisks. A Dark Age peasant isn't going to know about evolutionary biology, but he sure as hell will know something about wolves and how to deal with them.

For the same DC regarding manticores, you get to know it has 3 rows of teeth and that it can speak common and that it can be tricked easily.

Someone posted this on /tg/ and there were many lulz to be had as people continued to talk about what else there is to learn about bears, among other things.
