An Autogun is a chemically powered projectile throwing weapon(a slug thrower), that can be compared to 20th century fire arms. Simply put these weapons use a propellant to accelerate a metal projectile to punch holes in things. In addition there are two kinds of ammunition these weapons use. Cased bullets and ones that use caseless ammunition. the autoguns that use cased ammunition expend shell casings after firing. Autoguns come in pistol, rifle, sniper rifle, machine gun and antitank gun forms. Autoguns are popular among Cultists, Planetary Defence Forces and Gangs. And Autoguns were the primary arm of the Imperial Guard but the Munitorium threw a fit at all of the bullets expended in wartime. And thus the Autogun was replaced by the Lasgun.
It is a known fact that Autoguns are at the very least, generally more effective than Lasguns - with the exception that they use a finite ammunition. Since your Guardsman isn't going to last very long anyway, he may as well not have costly ammunition he wont have a chance to use.
