Excalibur is the legendary sword of King Arthur, sometimes attributed with magical powers or associated with the rightful sovereignty of Great Britain. (Keoland of your using Greyhawk’s world of Oerth) Sometimes Excalibur and the Sword in the Stone (the proof of Arthur's lineage) are said to be the same weapon, but in most versions they are considered separate. The sword was associated with the Arthurian legend very early. In many versions, Excalibur's blade was engraved with phrases on opposite sides: "Take me up" and "Cast me away" (or similar). In addition, when Excalibur was first drawn, in the first battle testing Arthur's sovereignty, its blade blinded his enemies.
Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady of the Lake sometime after he began to reign. She calls the sword "Excalibur, that is as to say as Cut-steel."
Some believe that the Lady of the Lake is MAYAHEINE (The Shield Maiden), LG demigod of Protection, Justice, and Valor
The challenge of drawing a sword from a stone(the proof of Arthur's lineage) also appears in the Arthurian legends of Galahad , whose achievement of the task indicates that he is destined to find the Holy Grail.
Many bards tell the fallowing poem:
“There drew he forth the brand Excalibur, And o’er him, drawing it, the winter moon, Brightening the skirts of a long cloud, ran forth And sparkled keen with frost against the hilt: For all the haft twinkled with diamond sparks, Myriads of topaz-lights, and jacinth-work Of subtlest jewellery.”
Abilities
When Excalibur is not activated it is known as The Sword in the Stone. A player must have Str 18 and the MONKEY GRIP feat to wield the The Sword in the Stone. It acts like a large warhammer that is 100 lb dealing 2d12 damage. This player is not yet worthy of Excalibur and cannot remove it from the stone but has enough Str to pick up both the sword and the stone it is attached to.
The book of Unearthed Arcana has an Alignment Starting Honor Score rating system to activate Excalibur by Drawing the sword from the stone a player must have an Honor Score of 100+. If the sword is activated and the player wielding it has their Honor Score drop below 100, then the sword will immediately find the closest stone and plunge itself into it and then become deactivated.
Once Excalibur is activated, it looks like a masterwork long sword with the following abilities;
- Player can cast all Paladin spells as if they are a level 20 Paladin
- Sunburst: (Sp)
Blinds all within 10 ft., deals 6d6 damage. Same as Drd 8, Sor/Wiz 8, Sun 8
- Frightful Presence (Ex)
(same as samurai) : A 20th-level samurai’s bravery, honor, and fighting prowess have become legendary. When the samurai draws his blade, opponents within 30 feet must succeed on a Will save (DC 20 + samurai’s Cha modifier) or become panicked for 4d6 rounds (if they have 4 or fewer Hit Dice) or shaken for 4d6 rounds (if they have from 5 to 19 Hit Dice). Creatures with 20 or more Hit Dice are not affected. Any foe that successfully resists the effect cannot be affected again by the same samurai’s frightful presence for 24 hours.
- Eclipse [epic] (Su)
With this spell, you can create a limited eclipse, as though a heavenly body moves between the sun and the earth. The landscape within a five-mile radius of your location experiences the dimming of the sun as a disk you create passes in front of it, culminating in a complete blackout and accompanying coronal ring. The eclipse follows you across the landscape for up to 8 hours, or until the sun goes down, or until you dismiss the eclipse. You do not need to concentrate on the eclipse while it lasts.
- Holy Ruin [epic] (Su)
You deal 20d6 points of damage to a single NON GOOD target within range. If the target is reduced to –10 hit points or less (or a construct, object, or undead is reduced to 0 hit points), it is utterly destroyed as if disintegrated. Only a trace of fine dust remains.
