Man's best friend a creature bred for friendship, hunter's aid, and police work. They have been by humankind's side for16.000 to 32.000 years and are mankind's best invention only on par with cats, porn, beer, and the internet. They are loyal and fierce, masking that with goofiness.
They've been bred into different forms over the countless millennia; from protection to fighting and even pulling carts. There are even dogs that can sniff out cancer.
Origins
A long time ago when mankind was a bunch of hunter gatherers we left a trail of scrapes that attracted predators and soon they started following us. One of these were wolves, eventually they became useful to humans, seeing the use of having animals that can be used for guarding and hunting. They kept the wolves, and over time somebody had the genius idea of breeding based on certain traits and soon this caused an artificial evolutionary tree. Through primitive genetic engineering selectively breeding things like fluffy coats for surviving colder weathers, thick skin for fighting other dogs, search and rescue and so on. Over 36.000 years they have been bred for millions of different tasks, but have also been one of the most wide spread companions they have even been sent into the Black reaches of space.
Breeds
Like dragons from D&D dogs have multiple breeds gaining different traits.
- Golden retriever a gun dog trained to retrieve waterfowl [Ducks and upland game] that have been shot at by their hunter, The golden retriever has gone on to be the most common breed of dog people think of when they think of dog.
- Labradors Another gun dog [No they don't Wield guns as bad ass as that would be, their another well known dog very good for being assistance dogs for the blind or disabled and are very athletic, their three different types, Chocolate, black, yellow, kinda like Elves except not extremely stupid or egotistical, Hey dog elves would be awesome.
- German shepherds A working dog originally bred for herding sheep has now become a well known working dog, from being in combat zones, to K-9 units, to air port security this is the dog well known for their strength and speed a all around working dog, though can actually be friendly and loving companions, originally from you guessed it Germany, though this dog would probably neuter any member of /pol/ in a heart beat, the dog was registered in Germany and had been put too use in both WW1 and WW2 and was introduced to the us after some soldier brought these dogs back to the U.S. Hell Warner brothers had their ass saved by these dogs with Rin tin tin.
- Chihuahuas one of the smallest dogs besides the Yorkie they originated in mexico though their origins are still debated the most a lot of information from ancient Meso american cultures possible linking them to Mayan and Aztec civilizations, another thing that their associated with is their rage and viciousness for such tiny little dogs and of course barking, on the bright side their real life cutebolds.
- Staffordshire Terriers/Pit Bulls: Khorne's favorite breed. Once considered to be one of the best dog breeds around, their reputation has been severely tarnished by either neglectful owners (usually of the trailer trash and ghetto variety) and/or dog-fighting rings. It doesn't help that they are a fiercely protective and active breed. However, under the right owners and care, they have been known to be hilariously goofy, rivaling even Labradors in shenanigans.
- Corgis: Officially endorsed by Her Royal Highness, so you know they're good. This Welsh breed of short and stumpy dogs is actually featured in Welsh mythology as "fairy dogs," and may be used as mounts by the Little People. As if they weren't already adorable enough.
- Border Collies: Bred to herd sheep, they're a serious contender for most intelligent of all dog breeds. Medium sized, black and white, and incredibly high energy, this breed absolutely needs regular exercise, and preferably work as well. If they don't have opportunities to run around, they can and will become neurotic and snippy. Females are usually louder and less polite than males.
Please add more breeds to this list.
Dogs in warhammer fantasy
The ruinous powers have Flesh hounds of Khorne essential very grouchy and blood thirsty puppers that have taste for psykers and wizards, Chaos is apparently hoarding all the doggos because the chaos warhounds are are part of the warriors of chaos faction and one addition could actually take marks of chaos as an upgrade.
The thought of a dog gaining enough infamy to ascend to a daemon Prince now that would be hilarious.
Dogs in Warhammer 40k
Dogs like humans have been spread across the galaxy after 40 thousands years of space travel and colonization though some places are probably lacking dogs, for a wide variety of reasons, still the fact of having a loyal companion might be useful in some places honestly it's odd why Games workshop hasn't given the Imperial Guard attack dogs they'd be perfect for harassing light infantry and directing Melee away from your firing lines, hell have them swarm Failabbadon and watch as the other player bangs his head on the wall as abbadon was Doggy piled to death, as cool as that would be sadly tabletop wise we have yet to have dogs units besides space wolves and those aren't even real wolves if where getting real about it. Dogs on forge world's are probably varying levels of health as the pollution and industrial waste could poisen the poor stray puppers though they'd probably adapt to life on said forge world, however they'd be likely to be adopted and used as guard dogs or food.
The adeptus arbitus have cyber mastiffs dogs who have been augmented so far that their essentially a dog's brain in a robotic body making them Robocop dog
The adeptus mechanicus also have cybernetic hounds which are used as cyber familiars and guard dogs, so that's a thing.
The Elucidian Starstriders rogue trader kill team has a dog. It's currently the only normal non-demon dog playable on the tabletop in 8th Edition.
Some Imperial Guard regiments have dogs now. They probably outrank you.
Dogs in Magic the gathering
Being one of creature types called hounds they are practically on every plane of existence in one form or another, this also means Some planes have them walk upright.
