The US 105mm Cannon, designated the M101A, was a field howitzer in service with the United States and various other countries around the globe.
IRL[edit]
The M101 started as an innovation devised after studying captured German military surplus from the First World War. The Army Ordinance board decided that they needed a bigger gun than a 75mm, so they created the first designs of the weapon.
Formally entering production in 1941 after some boats got blown up in Pearl Harbor, the M101 earned a reputation for reliability. This was particularly good for an artillery piece, and the added upside was this reduced the number of barrels they had to replace. However, this did come at the drawback of being a heavier weapon overall.
The weapon continued to serve with the US military until post-Vietnam, being retired later in the century from US service. However, the weapon can be found being used as Avalanche control devices in mountainous terrain.
The M101 saw itself mounted on dozens of different experimental vehicles in order to become a self propelled gun. One of the more interesting vehicles is the M4A3(105), where the mad lads decided to mount a howitzer into a Sherman. Generally speaking you would see them mounted on Priests.
