"It was 12:30, a Friday when the missiles launched, the daily lunch break was half-way finished. The students of Northeast Magnet still in the building had enough warning to move into the old fallout shelter built under the school, back when duck-and-cover drills were done daily. I'd been visiting my old high-school to find out if they planned on organizing a reunion for the class of '06.

McConnell AFB was hit by a 25 Megaton air burst. Ten miles away we were shaken up a great deal, but left mostly unharmed in the underground shelter the cold war had built under what used to be a grade-school. Sadly, the same thing could not be said of any vehicle not behind the sheltering form of the building."

He pauses and looks at me. "Why do you want to know anyway? It's not like my life's important; just another asshole with a rifle forcing people to give me what I need because I can't grow my own food. Sure I'll shoot other assholes with guns, but that's because this area can't feed more than one asshole with a gun. I'm done talking to you. Move on or I'll shoot you, just like all the other assholes who come walking in here looking for handouts without any work at all."
