Most of the population of Nepture is concentrated on the large satellite of Triton and on "cloud cities", specially built city-sized space stations floating in the upper strata of Neptune's atmosphere. Proteus is partially hollowed out and hosts a rather large city, and Nereid has the system's main commercial spaceport.
The Sun is distant, radiant energy is scarce and even solar panels are ineffective, so most people from Neptune dress very conservatively to not waste energy and warmth. It's also a very technologically focused planet, both due to the clouds working wonders as super-coolant, and because of the necessity of advanced reactors to produce the required energy.

The Neptune Oligarchy is ruled by a council of seven noble houses, each with its own armed forces.
Recently, the houses Renzor, Castello and Ayakashi banded together and formed a coup, leveling the Council Hall on Triton with an orbital bombardment and wiping out the higher-ups of the other houses. They then carried out a preemptive strike against the Order of Bejeweled Stars, capturing its Saints and killing its pilots (supposedly in order to achieve total supremacy over Neptune).

The Holy Order of Bejeweled Stars - No one is quite sure what is up with these women. Up until recently, they were a religious order with several charter houses all based in Neptune who each had custody of a specific mecha that they regarded as a blessed saint of the stars. These were each named after a gemstone that was part of the alloy used to make that Saint, ranging from Sapphire Saint to Opal Saint, each with their own combat capabilities. The pilots were each chosen carefully, for the Saints require esoteric needs to be met to function. Due to the risk of death in combat, the pilots are sometimes called 'martyrs.'

The pilots often would become mercenaries to allow themselves to share their version of the holy word while the other nuns would assist in maintaining other machines as well. Religious nutjobs, but pretty harmless ones when not in combat. Most of the Solar System knows of branches on their planets due to the visits they make to mecha hangers to leave incense and more useful offerings to the machines. Unfortunately, some noble house launched a coup on the order, taking a good amount of the mecha (and their pilots) and murdering several home charters. All that is left on Neptune is a final small order who is said to have no pilot for their missing mecha, and no means to train a new one... (We all know they are lying.)

They are not prejudiced against men in any way, but it is rare for men to join and the mecha normally can not be piloted by them. The nuns seriously don't know why, but when they have a male pilot, they prefer to keep the poor, precious, lucky bastard a secret. Due to the lack of intermarriage and to keep the Order alive, sex is allowed for its members and they also adopt. The only clue to children born outside of wedlock into the Order is their surname being Gem. Houseless adopted children also take on the name. If a person joins as an adult, they keep their original name, but also pick a gemstone or mineral to be addressed by. There is one rule with naming: You do not name yourself after the gemstone of whatever branch you are in. It's crass.

Status 5 - Sirius

Before the Order was lost, the Sirius Beryl was a member of the Diamond Order and was the main pilot for the Saint Diamond. However, she murdered three fellow pilots and then committed suicide before the noble house could take her to ensure that the remaining pilots were the ones unaware of the Diamond Saint's requirements.

The Seven Stellar Saints

Each Saint has a name related to a gemstone and a bizarre miracle linked to that stone, and a branch of the Order protecting it.

  • Diamond - Almost impossible to destroy, has the lowest firepower. Captured by the Rebel Houses.
  • Opal - Disruption of energies, usually energy shields and lasers. Low defense and very... visible. Location unknown.
  • Sapphire - The most combat capable of the seven, uses its crystalline shell to magnify all bullet hell it generates. Presumed destroyed in combat.
  • Onyx - Stealth and shadows to such a degree that it even can hide its presence on radar and its heat signature. Escaped the coup.
  • Ruby - Extraordinary resistant to the pressure and heat of any star or planet, though it is not immune. Location unknown.
  • Emerald - Regeneration; while the martyr may die, as long as Emerald's core remains it can regenerate. Captured by the Rebel Houses.
  • Amethyst - Almost perfect sensors and have a much longer range of communications. Captured by the Rebel Houses.
