''The Reynold family carries with it a history of both greatness and misfortune. Long have the men of the Reynold's name proudly served as marines and captains aboard the various trade vessels of Marienburg, garnering a reputation of able bodied sea men and disciplined soldiers that could be counted upon to maintain order and protect cargo, even to the death. Such a named commanded a high price, and the family Reynold a fairly charmed and successful life. Raised on the stories and riches of his fore bearers, Rhupert Reynold's grandfather, Marcus Reynold, sought to expand his house's name. Possessed with both greed and ambition that could nary be contained, Marcus used the reputation of the Reynold families to secure vast loans to finance the construction of ships for a new trade company, both owned and operated by the Reynold's family. Many within the family protested, they were soldiers first and foremost, not trades or businessmen, nor could the the house ever hope to pay the outrageous debt Marcus had now burdened them with. Marcus, the ever confident and foolish, assured all that this endeavor would carry the house to fortunes and influence far beyond what working for other families could ever bring. Two great ships were constructed, larger and more heavily armed than most navel vessals, manned with the most prestigious and competent men money could by, they were a sight of envy to many. Marcus quickly moved to secure expensive and daring trade agreements that would take the virgin company on a maiden voyage all over the know world, a venture that, if successful, could not only repay all debts leaned upon the family, but also usher them into a fortune beyond any had measured. Marcus sought to command the voyages himself, and on a foggy spring moved set out to cailm the fame and fortunes he so desperately sought. It was a disaster, the ships were to large and lacked proper maneuverability. To hastily built and foolishly never tested before today, the ships were lumbering, clumsy beasts. Once more, these beasts were carrying far to much stores of blackpowder. Not more than perhaps a dozen miles out from berth, the ships collided and managed to catch fire. Few survived from both the ships, and Marcus was not among them. The survivors told conflicting stories, some of sabotage, freak accidents, curses, lack of vision in the fog. Other's told a far more popular tale, one of at the time, family patron Marcus Reynolds, had purposely built two faulty ships and pocketed the rest of the loans to spend on excess. That Marcus hadn't died, but was very much in hiding with a fortune within his mitts. This was a rumor and event that would lead to the downfall of house Reynold. No trademaster would hire soldiers from a house known for deception and theft. Debtors took what little the house could offer as repayment.
