Overview[edit]
Despite the name, the Doomfire is actually the code-name given to a multitude of similarly designed bombers. Those encountered in the Koronus Expanse tend to be faster than their Imperial foes, though they still pack a dangerous payload. The "Iniquity Pattern" of the Doomfire seems to exclusively use Melta Missiles, rather than the Starhawk's Plasma Bombs. This gives it greater targeting ability, but more Doomfires must focus fire to match the sheer damage dealt by a Starhawk bombing run. As far as conventional weapons goes, the Doomfire is always equipped with a forward-facing Lascannon and three heavy Autocannon turrets for non-bombing runs.
Some Rogue Traders have reported seeing a variant of the Doomfire retrofitted for carrying troops and supplies for ground assaults, though this version is uncommon. In this role, the Doomfire trades its Melta Missiles for space for 25 troops or equivalent cargo. Little else is known about this Chaos spacecraft at present.
With regards to size, it is an estimate, but the Battlefleet Gothic Resources: Ships of the Gothic Sector book shows that it is similar in shape to the Swiftdeath Fighter - albeit the Bomber is much wider - and that both spacecraft is twice the length of the Dreadclaw. Since we have a model of the Dreadclaw, we can do a rough size comparison with a Space Marine. Average Space Marines are 8 feet tall, and a Dreadclaw is as tall as six Astartes stack head-to-toe. This gives us 48 feet or 14.6 meters tall. You add two Dreadclaws together and the Doomfire Bomber is roughly around 29.2-30 meters long. If we take that measurement seriously, the Doomfire isn't as big as the Starhawk by any measure and it fits the fluff of it being big enough to house 25 troops.
Battlefleet Gothic Armada 1 & 2[edit]
The Doomfire Bomber appear as the primary bomber wing of Chaos. They are the fastest bomber out of any faction, faster than even the faction that is meant to be fast such as the Eldar and Dark Eldar. The faster velocity allows Chaos to do bombing runs at a much quicker sortie.
