In times of War, the leaders of a Dwarf Clan will give out a call to arms to raise a throng. Most of the Dwarfs that answer are regular artisans, merchants, scribes and so forth which put down their tools and take up arms. For the most part, the policy is "bring your own stuff" and as such you'd get Dwarfs with a decent selection of stuff including crossbows and handguns. But the typical Dwarfen family will have a few good suits of mail, helmets and axes on hand for just such a purpose. Many also carry shields while some go for two handed axes, sacrificing protection for a greater capacity to split skulls.
