The Game[edit]

Citadel Combat Cards is a fast-paced game for 2 players, in which you pit your fighters – each of which is represented by a card – against your opponent’s fighters, because why waste your time building and painting models when you can just open a box and start playing? Whoever wins the most battles wins the game! Each game lasts 6 rounds, during each of which attacks are made – ranged, melee and psychic.

Included in the starter box are 60 cards, split into 2 decks – 30 for the Space Marines, and 30 for the sinister forces of Chaos – each of which fulfills a battlefield role (HQ, Troops, Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support). Setting up your cards and deploying the right card at the right time is the key to victory – special bonuses are applied when the right cards are supporting each other!

Each card features an image of a Citadel miniature along with its name. 2 reference cards make it easy to determine special bonuses and victors for each battle.

The Mobile Game[edit]

Combat Cards is now a Free to Play mobile game made by Flaregames. It has many similarities to the original card game, with Melee, Ranged, and Psychic attacks, and photos of Citadel Miniatures for the card art. Factions within the game are Space Marines, Servants of the Emperor, Necrons, T'au, Eldar, Orks, Tyranids, and Chaos.

The game has a strong Pay to Win model, but the negatives are offset by fairly balanced matchmaking, and a ranking system that allows you to only ever advance, not fall back. In addition, while you battle against player decks, they're always AI controlled. Ultimately you're never in a situation where you feel at a disadvantage for not paying, and no part of actually playing the game is gated behind currency. Money powers up your cards faster, but you'll rarely hit a wall due to having weaker cards, and the game gives out dozens of free cards every day.
