Savant is one of the "new" classes in Dragon Compendium, appearing as an update of a 2E class that originally appeared in issue 140. While the other seven classes are effectively variants of PHB classes, Savant is actually a unique class with competent enough design and an original concept. The Savant is truly able to do everything to a degree: Good skills, martial weapons, trapfinding, arcane casting, and even divine casting. The one unique feature the Savant has is Skill Assistance, which allows allies to use some of his skill check results instead of their own, explicitly allowing the paladin in noisy armor to sneak well. Unfortunately, by the time Dragon Compendium released, that concept of a class that could do some of everything was done better by the Factotum. Savant is a tier 4 class. It's a effectively a Rogue that trades a lot for a bit of casting. It can overcome some obstacles with relative ease, but will totally struggle with others. ==Pathfinder== In Spheres of Might Savant is an Alternate Class (archetype big enough to get its own table, as Ninja is to Rogue) of Spheres of Powers Thaumaturge. They stand out as getting to swap out their combat talents gained from the class at the start of every day. If there is a Tier 1 practitioner, it's them. Unlike Armiger, they have no restrictions on needing to have a base sphere before being able to shift their talents around and can pick up the spheres that are best suited to saying "no" to a problem like Alchemy, Beastmastery, Leadership, or Tech.
