dnd-stub The Dreamcaller is a fanmade full class for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition invented for the Chronicles of Aeres setting, alongside the Alchemist and Witch. As the name suggests, the Dreamcaller is essentially a Conjurer or Summoner archetype who draws their powers from the magical energies of the Plane of Dreams (or what passes for that place in Aeresian cosmology). The basic idea of the dreamcaller is that they sacrifice a piece of their connection to the waking world to forge a bond with the dreaming realm, allowing them to summon a manifest dream-being, or esper, into the world to do their bidding. Dreamcalling represents one of the last magical traditions developed in the early days of Aeres, in contrast to witchcraft, and they have largely been absent from the stage of history; only in more recent years have dreamcallers begun to openly walk the lands. The tradition is largely associated with the Elf subrace known as the Twilight Elves, but anyone with a sufficiently fiery imagination and a burning attraction to fantasy might find their way to wielding the powers of the dream-realm. Mechanically, the dreamcaller most closely resembles a warlock, with a dash of the [[sorcerer (Dungeons & Dragons)|sorcerer). They have a fairly small pool of spells known (maxing out at 15), an even smaller pool of daily spell slots (6!), and can only learn spells of up to 5th level. They regain 1 spell slot on a short rest, and their full allotment on a long rest. They also have a separate pool of cantrips, a system of pseudo-Invocations called "Alcheras", and the ability to summon Espers. Like the Witch, the Dreamcaller's spells key off of Wisdom. In their case, their spells are largely drawn from the wizard spell list, being a mixture of Illusionist and Enchanter with a few Conjurer spells. Like a sorcerer, the Dreamcaller has a mana pool, called "Dream Mana". This is used to power the act of summoning an Esper, and is regained with a Long Rest. The specific kinds of espers a dreamcaller can summon depends on their level; some espers need a higher level to be summoned than others, and they cost Dream Mana equal to their level. As a dreamcaller's Dream Mana pool is equal to their level, it takes 2 turns for an esper to manifest, and an esper only remains manifested for 1 minute, knowing when to use an esper is vital. Otherwise, they largely act like any other summoned creature. Alcheras differ from Invocations in that every dreamcaller gains access to the same set of Alcheras at the same levels. Each is basically a spell-like ability to that can be used a certain number of times per day, with effects that gain a slight boost once the dreamcaller hits the right level. The Alcheras consist of: * Perchance to Dream: 2nd level, functions as Sleep spell, can be used 1/short rest. Affects 7d8 hit points of foes from 5th level, 9d8 from 8th level, and 11d8 from 11th level. From 15th level, can affect creatures normally immune to charm. * The Bewitching Grasp of the Sands: 4th level, spend an action to force a target within 30ft to pass a Wisdom save vs. spellcasting DC or reduce their movement rate to 5ft for 3 turns. From 8th level, a failure instead reduces their speed to 0ft for 3 turns. * Hypnagogic Silence: 6th level, spend an action to force a target within 60ft to pass a Wisdom save vs. spellcasting DC or be Frightened and Silenced for 3 turns. From 10th level, you can target 3 creatures with this Alchera at once. * The Piercing Blade of Nightmare: 8th level, spend 1 Dream Mana to make a spell attack (range 30ft, 4d8+4 magical psychic damage) 1/short rest. Damage increases to 8d8+8 at 12th level and 12d8+12 at 16th level. * Forever Waking: 12th level, spend an action to force a target within 60ft to pass a Wisdom save vs. spellcasting DC or be rendered unconscious for hours equal to your level. You can only use this Alchera once every 3 days. At 9th level, the dreamcaller gains the Dream Mastery feature, letting them restore Dream Mana on a short rest instead of a long one. At 14th level, Dream Siphoning causes the dreamcaller to regain 1 Dream Mana each time they successfully use an Alchera on a target. Finally, at 20th level, The Dreamwalker lets the dreamcaller teleport to any other place on Aeres where it is night at a cost of 5 Dream Mana.
