Kobolds were amongst the many "humanoid" races to debut in the [[Known World Gazetteers|Known World Gazetteer #10: The Orcs of Thar]], alongside [[orc]]s, [[goblinoid]]s, [[ogre]]s, [[troll]]s and [[gnoll]]s. Over in the UK, ''Imagine'' magazine (TSR owned!) for the Pelinore setting actually had the original of the Kobolds as a race, back then being more goblin-dog-like than lizardlike, as being the degenerated, land-adapted descendants of ''Sahuagin''. So, as clade goes... ichthyostega-like.
