==The next Imperial Fists== Before The War of the Beast series was completed, there was a theory among fans about the Fists Exemplar and the Imperial Fists. It ran something like this: "There is little to no mention of the Fists Exemplar in the fluff outside of the Beast Arises series, which took place on 544.M32. During this war, the Imperial Fists chapter itself was reduced to a single Battle-Brother following the initial Ork invasion of Ardamantua, leaving the Phalanx near abandoned and the Chapter practically extinct. However, the Imperial Fists are noted to have been involved in The Beheading in 546.M32, meaning they somehow made a miraculous recovery. Which is not feasible given the short space of time with which to culture new gene-seed and train marines. Not only that, but captain Maximus Thane has purportedly inscribed his name on Dorn's skeletal hand; an honour usually reserved for Imperial Fist chapter masters. That, coupled with the Fists Exemplars lack of recognition elsewhere seems to suggest that the Exemplars neatly replaced their parent Chapter in history, as the Imperium would likely not publicly allow a First Founding chapter and the protectors of Terra to fall in such ignominy. This was outright confirmed in Shadow of Ullanor, which reveals that the Fists Exemplar formed the core of a "reborn" Imperial Fists chapter made up of the greatest Marines from all the successor chapters. This was a measure deemed necessary by Thane, who recognised the disastrous signal that the wholesale destruction of a First Founding Chapter (and the Protectors of Terra, at that!) would send. So, you might ask, if only the best marines from the successors went into the "new" Imperial Fists, where the fuck did the rest of them go? Well, not all the Fists Exemplar were present at Terra. A detachment under their First Captain, Zerberyn, was away from Terra at the time this decision was made; weakened and cut off from the Imperium, they were forced to ally with the Iron Warriors of all people against the Beast's seemingly unstoppable Ork hordes. During this time, Zerberyn actually came to see the sense in some of the Iron Warriors' tactics and even began having doubts about what to do; this uncertainty was worsened after being forced to kill Imperial forces in self-defence due to a particularly fanatical Inquisitor threatening the whole Chapter's death over his group's alliance with the IW. Eventually, a group of Black Templars rocked up to the IW-FE party, headed up by High Marshal Bohemond. Things went about as pleasantly as you might expect from a meeting of psychotic Knights Templar in Spess and their mortal enemies, with the three forces essentially becoming locked in a Mexican standoff - Bohemond screaming for the heads of the Iron Warriors, Warsmith Kalkator manipulating Zerberyn's doubts to his advantage, and the Fists Exemplar themselves divided between the two camps. With the battle-lines drawn and Bohemond ignoring any attempts at negotiations, Zerberyn made his choice. He blew Bohemond's head off more or less in front of everyone present, before pulling rank on the rest of his detachment to command them to fight on the side of the Iron Warriors. All but one company joined him in his rebellion, and joined the Iron Warriors with the last loyal company returning and joining the rebuilt Imperial Fists. Thane, having become the Imperial Fists Chapter Master in their absence, was completely apoplectic at what had happened and ordered the last surviving officer to destroy their records, relics, and rituals before subsuming the remnants of the Fists Exemplar into the Imperial Fists to conceal the stigma of their becoming the first Chapter to fall to Chaos since the Horus Heresy - thus explaining their absence in the list of known Second Founding Chapters. Strange how they would tolerate them joining ranks however. Most of the Iron Warriors would sooner exterminate themselves than allow pure Imperial Fists to join them. They barely tolerate the Warsmith Honsou for having both Iron Warrior and Imperial Fist gene-seed and even then they hate him for existing. Most likely the author realized the Fists Exemplar had been dropped out of the Codexes (perhaps forgotten about or just disliked by Geedubs for being an odd one out among their Legion) and decided to make a reason for it for whatever reason. In-universe, it's possible that the particular Iron Warriors commander was so low on troops at that time that they had no choice but to accept them, as they were desperate for manpower and had lost most of their bases. Alternatively, the gene-seed racism may not have been as bad several thousand years before Honsou's time. It's likely a combination of both as the Iron Warriors Warband was probably also cut off from the Eye of Terror and the greater part of the Legion during the War of the Beast. While the fluff here isn't quite perfect, the fall of the Fists Exemplar is a pretty cool subplot in the Beast books, and one that solves some thematic holes. Its all about their pride, and how that makes them scornful even of other Marines and each other. Zerberyn sees the Iron Warriors like cool older brothers who just please themselves and aren't bound to the whims of lessers, so why not just do that? But they don't really have a goal except being feudal lords, just using the crisis to split off and be king. We don't see a lot of that and this fa/tg/uy likes it. Also their treachery led to Thane also being "last of the chapter" like Koorland was, which is a nice touch. In a series that really does go on too long, the Exemplars are a pleasing closed loop who are suitably grimdark. (Perturabo might have smirked at the fact that Dorn's Sons have defected to his Legion).
