==The Dungeon Master==
Critical Role is DMed by Matthew "Matt" Mercer. While generally regarded as being an awesome DM, Matt's ranking in those holiest of annals is a source of [[Skub|Discussion]]. While some fans regard him as the "BEST DM EVAR," most of /tg/ is a bit hesitant to give him that title, given his leniency towards his party. 
This is because Matt tends to be gentle on his players even when they make very stupid mistakes, and there have been only two, arguably one, main-PC perma-deaths in Critical Role history. 

Another source of contention are his now-memetastic "Mercianisms." Describing monsters as having a "toothy maw," and damaged, low-HP creatures as "looking pretty rough" are the most famous examples. He also has a tendency to greatly over-use the words "figure" and "form." 

Many neckbeards would argue that if any web-series DM should get the title of best ever, it would be Brennan Lee Mulligan (and they probably wouldn't be wrong for thinking that). However, as Matt is the only exposure a lot of new players have to dungeon masters, his undeniably strong ability has led to a phenomenon known as the Mercer Effect, discussed below.

Regardless of how Mercer is seen, whether as the greatest or not, his influence is certainly not insignificant on the wider DnD community, at minimum earning him a place in the annals of D&D's History.
