=== Background === Melody came from a small town on the edges of Claslat, wedged into a snug little crevice between a rich deposit of magical materials and the edge of the Pole of Metal. The people there were happy and content, and didn't lack for much, except contact with the rest of the world. Everyone knew everyone, and helped each other out. There were occasional incidents, but they were handled inside the town, and they continued to be left alone, with only one tram-rail connecting them to a larger city. There were no representatives of the Starmetal caste in town, so a young couple of engineers took it upon themselves to build one for the town. Melody was built over the course of several months' worth of shifts, with great love and care paid to every little cog in her body. When she awoke, she had two doting engineers waiting for her. The town rejoiced to see her, and welcomed the young starmetal with open arms. She loved everyone in the town, and was loved in return. Especially by a young lector who had recently come to the town. She worked with him often, and learned all about the Great Maker from him. More, she learned about the cities of Autochthon, and the wonders of the outside world. She resolved to visit the Big City one day. She got her wish when the Theomachracy contacted her, asking her to come to the city of Gulak. She saved up every glot she could get her hands on to buy a ticket to the great holy city, and several other things she'd need besides. As she was about to board the train, the two young engineers, now older, presented her with a gift; a starmetal and orichalcum microphone. They told her she would need it in the days to come, and their faces were somber, despite the warmth in their voices. She hugged them goodbye, then waved to everyone and boarded the train to her destiny. It was while she was in a stopover in a small suburb of Estasia that the event which would lead to her venturing into Creation occurred. The tram had a several hour layover, and she was at a loose end. She ventured into the city, toward the edges, to find a moment's peace from the hurly-burly and constant bustle. She wandered a little too far, though, and found herself on the leading edge of an army of gremlin machines that chanted three words: 'GAH LAK TUS'. She stared in horror as the alien machines advanced on the city. Over her shoulder, the city slumbered on, oblivious to the danger. The GAH LAK TUS could not be allowed to reach the city... but what could she do but sing? She stared down at the microphone in her hand, and sang. She sang about truth, and love, and the good things in life. GAH LAK TUS advanced still. Taking several steps back, she sang about danger and fire and the guns of the Miliariat. GAH LAK TUS ignored her. She sang of the lives in the town, and their hopes, dreams, and struggles. GAH LAK TUS quickened its pace. Crying out in horror, she sprinted deep into the city and plugged her microphone into the nearest broadcasting pole she could find. She called out to the defenses of the city just as the GAH LAK TUS attacked. Luckily, she was in time to rouse the watch, and call down the full might of Estasia's military on the thing. She fought where she could, bolstering the morale of the troops with song and, when she found out her microphone's other abilities, blade. As she rode on toward Gulak, she thought about what had happened. It did not respond to her at all, save to aim several weapons her way when she spoke. She had thought for the longest time that all things could be brought together through harmonious communication. It was even in her name! And yet... She arrived in Gulak, and received immediate summons onward, to Yugash, where someone who'd taken a great interest in her told her of a team being put together to travel to a new world, one where her talents could best be put to use. Creation.
