===The Golden Country=== Long ago, the place where the present dungeon meant to be was a place called The Golden Country. The land was wealthy and its people were happy...until disaster struck. The kingdom was in famine and the Dwarfs taking their chances and invaded. What's worse was that the prince of the kingdom Eodio fell ill and there were no doctors available. In order to save the kingdom, the king Delgal ask his Elven court wizard and childhood friend Thistle to save him and his kingdom. While excavating the kingdom's ancient dungeon ruins, Thistle found a book and ended up made a contact with a being known as The Winged Lion (aka a fucking demon) which granted him unlimited power within the dungeon. And just like that, Eodio was saved, the invaders were brutally killed by the dungeon's monsters, and every citizens rejoiced and lived happily in a carbon-copy of The Golden Country created by Thistle in his own dungeon (completed with sunlight and monsters as livestock). However, the unlimited amount of power from the dungeon and his own complex desires had corrupt Thistle greatly, driven him into madness. Thistle is now called The Lunatic Magician. In this new Golden Country, he ruled it with an iron fist, forcing everybody to live in the dungeon (because that's the only place he could use his power) without starvation, death or other bad stuffs. [[grimdark|If anyone rebelled or wanting to go back to the surface, they will either be publicly executed or punished by either turned a ghost to wander for eternity or confined into a doll or other objects. Thistle's wish for the citizens to live a peaceful immortal life without hunger for eternity is in fact torturous for everyone in the kingdom, for after 1000 years, it ended up dull their sense of taste and mind since they were living in boredom for a long time without any changes]]. The old Golden Country were eventually wither and sinking underground with no one to care of during the absence of its citizens 1000 years. *Freinag - The earliest king of the old Golden Country. He had once wanted a elf man-servant because he believed someone in power must have a long-lived race servant to show off their status symbol. Due to the fear of Elven usurper scheme and their mastery over magic, the king's advisors had provided Freinag with a Elven child (aka Thistle) instead to work as a court jester (because as far as a usurper goes, they cannot start out too young). The king ended up getting attached to Thistle as if he was his son. Freinag was eventually died of wine poisoned by the ascentor of the Lord of the Island on Delgal's wedding day. *Delgal - Freinag's son and his successor. Delgal grew up alongside Thistle and the two were raised as if they were brothers. Delgal love Thistle so much that he blame himself for Thistle's descent to madness. So far he is the only person that had succeeded in escaping to the surface, and had possessed his son Eodio's body to accomplish that. By the time he reached the surface, he shows up in a village's graveyard alerting the villagers there. Weakened to the point of withering into dusts, he told the villagers "whoever defeat the magician can have his kingdom" and kicked starts the exploration of the dungeon. *Eodio - Delgal's son. The aforementioned sickly child cured by Thistle as the lord of the dungeon. Eodio reached adulthood in Thistle's Golden Country and had a son named Yaad there. As Eodio grew up, he began to dissatisfied with Thistle way of calling the shots around, and fed up with living in the dungeon forever. Unable to take Eodio's criticism while also not wanting Eodio to repeat the old tragedy, Thistle rip Eodio's soul out, thereby turning him into the first wandering ghost, telling him to "cool off" for a while. However, it seems like Eodio never managed to went back to his body since Delgal used it to go to the surface, and being turned to a ghost for too long could gradually degrade that person's memory. In other words, Eodio will be wandering the dungeon as a ghost for eternity without a way to get back. *Yaad - Eodio's son. He was born after Thistle had become the lord of the dungeon and thus has spent his entire life in the dungeon. Living in the dungeon for 1000 years or more has dulled his sense of taste, plus the fact he never felt any sense of hunger since he has been granted immortality by Thistle. He was one of many people of The Golden Country that had helped Delgal escaped to the surface. He believed a prophecy from The Winged Lion (whom everyone in The Golden Country viewed as a guardian) where Thistle will be defeated by a group of adventure and thus had secretly assisted Thorden's party in defeating Thistle. Yaad was eventually found out and had his soul bind to a doll as punishment. After Thistle's defeat, Izutsumi found Yaad as a doll and only carried it with him because he had sympathizes with his wish to be a tall-man again (Izutsumi is a beast-man wanting to be back as a tall-man). After The Winged Lion's defeat, Yaad had the rest of Thorden's party to find him a body in order to escape. Yaad's old body was crushed (RIP) so he copied what his grandfather did to reach the surface and possessed Delgal's. Yaad for some reasons had decided to carry the vegetable Thistle with him since from deep down he knew the brown elf wasn't evil yet he just couldn't leave him. Yaad managed to guide the party to the first level's entrance, only to say goodbye by the door since the dungeon's power is what kept their body alive...which is no longer the case since Winged Lion's action to breaking the border between the dungeon and the surface world has prolong dungeon's magic effect. So it seems like Yaad and the ghosts of The Golden Country will be alive for a while. *Thistle - Or Sissel (if you like the official translation), aka The Lunatic Magician. A brown male elf adopted by Freinag, the former king of the Golden Country and Delgal's father. He grew up as a court jester, fluent with various instruments. As he grew older, he began to change his expertise and study magic, becoming The Golden Country's court magician. Thistle appears single-minded in his devotion to King Delgal and the Golden Country, and treasure Delgal like his brother, and was presented when Delgal was born. After he becomes lord of the dungeon, he became irrational and not one for reasonable conversation. Thistle ended up causing more harm to the people he has sworn to protect by turning them into wandering ghost or cursing them to eternal suffering (which he though to be a blessing). He was ultimately defeated by the Winged Lion after emerged triumphant against Laios, where it ambushed him with a sneak attack, took away his desire to resist and ultimately consumed all of his desires, turning the once known Lunatic Magician into a mindless, desireless vegetable. Just before he turned however, he unconsciously passed the lord of the dungeon position to Marcille. Despite all his tyranny, Yaad still sympathized with him and had carried his vegetable body out of the dungeon while it was collapsing from the aftershock of the lion's death. *The Winged Lion - SPOILER: The final boss of the manga and the true architect behind the dungeon. The Once thought to be the guardian of The Golden Country. Heavily inspired by a biblical demon named Buer, he looks like a talking golden lion with wings. His true nature was that of a shape shifting demon with no true form in disguised, a being of living mana with unlimited power who was sealed away long ago by the ancients. His sole purpose to live is to consume the desires of living being, and he accomplishes it by granting them wishes, fulfilling their desires so the flavor of their fulfilled desire could change and taste better, like a farmer harvesting its crops. It was once deeply regretting for granting a Dwarfs' wish to destroy the world, as it had robbed the lion's countless of potential living beings it could harvest desires from. Ever since then, it has grown more careful at "growing" (or grooming) its subjects. The Lion's ultimate goal is to consume humanity's desires for all eternity, forever filling his non-existence bottomless stomach. In order to achieve his dream, he must become stronger after fed with enough of living beings strong desires (and he had achieved it after eating Thistle's). After that, he must find a way to break into the surface world and acquire a living being's body, which is accomplish by taking away Laios body after granting him the desire to become the ultimate monster. With Laios as the ultimate monster, Winged Lion could easily controls him to break the barrier. Unfortunately for the lion, he didn't taking Laios' treachery into account (the first thing Laios would do after becoming a monster is to experience the taste of a human, and The Winged Lion was possessing Laios' body), it also did not notice to what Laios considered to be the ultimate monster, missing out that the ultimate monster has the ability to consume desires just like demon (Winged Lion just granting Laios' wish based on his notebook without even double checking it. Lazy demon), ultimately allowing Laios to eat the lion's desire and thus killing it. Without any desires to live, Lion ceased to exist, but not before he cursed Laios to not be unable to fulfill his greatest wish.
